Abstract

A system and method of providing therapy to a patient using a plurality of electrodes implanted within the patient. A virtual multipole configuration is defined relative to the plurality of electrodes. The distance between each of a group of the electrodes and a virtual pole of the virtual multipole configuration is determined. A stimulation amplitude distribution is determined for the electrode group based on the determined distances, thereby emulating the virtual multipole configuration. Electrical energy is conveyed from the electrode group in accordance with the computed stimulation amplitude distribution.

Claims

1. A system for delivering electrical stimulation to tissue using electrodes, the system including:

an electrical stimulator configured to be connected to the electrodes and to deliver the electrical stimulation using a stimulation electrode distribution; and

a processor configured to define a virtual pole, select an electrode group from the electrodes, determine a distance between each electrode in the electrode group to the virtual pole, and determine the stimulation electrode distribution for use by the electrical stimulator to deliver the electrical stimulation using the determined distance.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to define more than one virtual pole to define a virtual multipole.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to limit a number of electrodes in the electrode group to a maximum number.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to compare a function of a distance between each of the plurality of electrodes and the virtual pole to a threshold value, and exclude at least one electrode from the electrode group based on the comparison.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to determine the stimulation electrode distribution by weighting electrodes in the electrode group as a decreasing function of the determined distances.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the processor is configured to compute a fractionalized current value for each electrode of the electrode group as a quotient of the weight for the each electrode divided by the sum of the weights for the electrode group.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising a user interface configured to generate directional control signals, wherein the processor is further configured to move the defined virtual pole in response to the direction control signals.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the electrical stimulator includes an implantable electrical stimulator, the system further including an external device that includes the processor.

9. A system for delivering electrical stimulation to tissue using electrodes;

the system including

an electrical stimulator configured to be connected to the electrodes and to deliver the electrical stimulation using a stimulation electrode distribution; and

a processor configured to define a virtual pole, select an electrode group from the electrodes, determine a distance between each electrode in the electrode group to the virtual pole, and determine the stimulation electrode distribution for use by the electrical stimulator to deliver the electrical stimulation using the determined distance, wherein the processor is configured to compare a function of a distance between each of the plurality of electrodes and the virtual pole to a threshold value, exclude at least one electrode from the electrode group based on the comparison, determine the stimulation electrode distribution by weighting electrodes in the electrode group as a decreasing function of the determined distances, and compute a fractionalized current value for each electrode of the electrode group as a quotient of the weight for the each electrode divided by the sum of the weights for the electrode group.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the processor is further configured to communicate with a user input to receive a user-inputted number, and to limit the number of electrodes in the electrode group to no more than the user-inputted number.

11. A method, comprising:

using a processor to define a virtual pole, select an electrode group from a plurality of electrodes, determine a distance from each electrode in the electrode group to the virtual pole, and determine a stimulation electrode distribution for delivering electrical stimulation using the determined distance; and

using an electrical stimulator to deliver the electrical stimulation according to the determined stimulation electrode distribution.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein using the processor to define the virtual pole includes using the processor to define more than one virtual pole to define a virtual multipole.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the virtual multipole includes a virtual bipole or a virtual tripole.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising limiting a number of electrodes in the electrode group to a maximum number.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising receiving a user input to provide the maximum number.

16. The method of claim 11, further comprising using the processor to compare a function of a distance between each of the plurality of electrodes and the virtual pole to a threshold value, and exclude at least one electrode from the electrode group based on the comparison.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the function of the distance includes a proportion function, a higher order power function, or an exponential function.

18. The method of claim 11, further comprising using the processor to determine the stimulation electrode distribution by weighting electrodes in the electrode group as a decreasing function of the determined distances.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising using the processor to compute a fractionalized current value for each electrode of the electrode group as a quotient of the weight for the each electrode divided by the sum of the weights for the electrode group.

20. The method of claim 11, further receiving directional control signals from a user interface and using the processor to move the defined virtual pole in response to the direction control signals.
