LIBS analysis system
First Claim
1. A handheld LIBS system comprising:
- a housing;
an optics stage movably mounted to the housing including an optics head with a laser focusing lens;
a spectrometer subsystem in the housing configured to receive electromagnetic radiation from a sample and provide an output;
a nose section including;
the laser focusing lens, an apertured end plate removably fastened to the nose section via at least one fastener, and an optically transparent shield spaced from the end plate and in front of the laser focusing lens protecting the laser focusing lens and defining a purge chamber between the shield and the removable end plate;
a laser source in the housing oriented to direct a laser beam to the sample via the laser focusing lens, the shield, and the aperture in the end plate; and
a purge gas source fluidly coupled to the purge chamber.

Abstract
A handheld LIBS spectrometer includes an optics stage movably mounted to a housing and including a laser focusing lens and a detection lens. One or more motors advance and retract the optics stage, move the optics stage left and right, and/or move the optics stage up and down. A laser source in the housing is oriented to direct a laser beam to the laser focusing lens. A spectrometer subsystem in the housing is configured to receive electromagnetic radiation from the detection lens and to provide an output. A controller subsystem is responsive to the output of the spectrometer subsystem and is configured to control the laser source and motors. In this way, auto-calibration, auto-clean, and auto-focus, and/or moving spot functionality is possible.

a housing; an optics stage movably mounted to the housing including an optics head with a laser focusing lens; a spectrometer subsystem in the housing configured to receive electromagnetic radiation from a sample and provide an output; a nose section including;
the laser focusing lens, an apertured end plate including a calibration standard and removable from the nose section via at least one fastener, an optically transparent shield spaced from the end plate and in front of the optics head protecting the laser focusing lens, and a purge chamber between the end plate and the shield;a laser source in the housing oriented to direct a laser beam to the sample via the laser focusing lens, the shield, and the aperture in the end plate; a purge gas source fluidly coupled to the purge chamber; a controller subsystem responsive to the output of the spectrometer subsystem and configured to control the laser source and to control the optics stage to initiate a calibration routine including computer instructions which move said optics stage to aim the laser source at the calibration standard, to power the laser source to produce a laser beam, to process the output of the spectrometer subsystem, and to calibrate the spectrometer based on the output of the spectrometer subsystem; and and a purge gas source coupled to the purge chamber.
