1. A method for detecting whether an individual who enters a room of a patient washes his or her hands prior to approaching the patient, said method comprising the steps of:

  • (a) configuring a virtual patient zone defining an area around a patient who is located within a room;

    (b) providing one or more 3D motion and sound sensors to capture live video data from the area;

    (c) forwarding the video data from the one or more 3D motion and sound sensors to a computerized monitoring system;

    (d) determining by the computerized monitoring system from the received video data when an individual is a certain distance from the area or has entered the area;

    (e) determining by the computerized monitoring system from the received video data whether the individual washed his or her hands where it is determined in step (d) that the individual is within a certain distance from the area or within the area;

    (f) electronically transmitting an alert or notification to the individual by a computerized communication system when the computerized monitoring system determines that the individual did not wash his or her hands in step (e); and

    (g) electronically transmitting an alert or notification to a centralized monitoring system by the computerized monitoring system when the computerized monitoring system determines that the individual did not wash his or her hands in step (e).
