- a) obtaining a sample from a human subject;
b) detecting a homozygous polymorphism selected from rs7130929 allele C, rs4537731 allele T, and rs4757610 allele G, in the sample,c) diagnosing the subject with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) when said homozygous polymorphism is detected in the sample; and
d) treating said subject with an effective amount of a serotonin antagonist medication, wherein said serotonin antagonist medication targets TPH1.
