Abstract

Devices and methods of using a personal emergency reporting system device is described. The personal emergency reporting system (PERS) device wakes up based on timing, manual activation or an accelerometer in the PERS device detecting an abnormal condition. The PERS device measures the orientation and correlate and sends statistics to a console. The PERS device determines whether a predetermined threshold has been met to determine whether a fall event has occurred or whether to enter a more active monitoring state. The PERS device also determines whether it is appropriate to transmit an alarm to a central monitoring station via the console and transmits the alarm if desired.

Claims

1. A personal emergency reporting system (PERS) device comprising:

an orientation sensor configured to measure orientation of the PERS device;

a transceiver;

processing circuitry configured to;

initiate an orientation measurement based on at least one of timing, manual activation or a sensor detecting an abnormal condition,

receive from the orientation sensor an orientation measurement,

determine that a predetermined orientation change in a predetermined time has been met,

in response to a determination that the predetermined orientation change in the predetermined time has been met, determine whether at least one of;

a fall event has occurred in response to a determination that each of multiple successive changes in orientation between adjacent orientation measurements at least meets a different predetermined threshold, the predetermined thresholds decreasing with increasing change in orientation from an initial orientation, or

to enter a more active monitoring state, and

in response to a determination that a fall event has occurred, instruct the transceiver to transmit an alert signal to at least one of a local or remote device, the alert signal indicating that a fall event has occurred; and

a housing retaining the sensor, transceiver and processing circuitry and configured to be worn by a user.

2. The PERS device of claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of sensors including an accelerometer configured to measure acceleration and shock thresholds, wherein the initiation of the orientation measurement is further based on at least one of the acceleration exceeding a predetermined acceleration or a shock threshold being exceeded, and the determination of whether a fall event has occurred is free from being based on measurements of the accelerometer.

3. The PERS device of claim 1, further comprising:

a necklace having a neck strap and a pendant connected with the neck strap, and an altimeter disposed in the neck strap, the altimeter configured to measure a change in altitude of the housing, wherein at least one of the initiation of the orientation measurement or the determination of whether a fall event has occurred is further based on a predetermined rate of change of altitude being exceeded.

4. The PERS device of claim 1, further comprising:

a biometric sensor configured to measure biometrics of the user,

wherein a fall detection algorithm stored in a memory of the PERS device is personalized to the user based on historical biometric thresholds of the user.

5. The PERS device of claim 4, wherein:

the historical biometric thresholds one of originate from another PERS device associated with the user or are determined by a training session with the user.

6. The PERS device of claim 4, wherein:

the processing circuitry is configured to determine that a change in orientation between adjacent orientation measurements at least meets another predetermined threshold and, in response, trigger a more active measurement state for at least one of orientation or biometrics for a predetermined amount of time.

7. The PERS device of claim 1, further comprising:

a memory configured to store a historical user profile that indicates user activities, timing of the user activities and effects of the user activities on one or more sensors,

wherein a fall detection algorithm stored in the memory is personalized to the user based on the historical user profile.

8. The PERS device of claim 7, wherein:

multiple users are associated with the PERS device and the processing circuitry is configured to determine, using at least one of the user profile, biometric history or a user-actuated control on the housing, which of the users is wearing the PERS device.

9. The PERS device of claim 1, wherein:

the processing circuitry is configured to determine that another PERS device is proximate and in response adjust transmission of the alert signal to avoid transmitting the alert signal or to transmit a modified alert signal.

10. The PERS device of claim 1, wherein:

the orientation sensor is configured to periodically sample an orientation of the PERS device,

an orientation history is stored in a memory, and

the transceiver is configured to transmit the stored orientation history either periodically or at event-driven times in which a periodicity of transmission is dependent on previous history, and current time and location of the PERS device.

11. The PERS device of claim 1, wherein:

the PERS device is orientation-sensitive in one dimension only when a change in the orientation in the at least one direction exceeds a predetermined threshold.

12. A method of managing a fall event, the method comprising:

measuring orientation of a personal emergency reporting system (PERS) device worn by a user;

determining that a fall event has occurred using at least one orientation measurement to determine that a predetermined orientation change has been met, the fall event determined without using an acceleration measurement;

in response to determining that a fall event has occurred, transmitting an alert signal indicating that a fall event has occurred to at least one of a local device via a short range communication protocol or a remote device via a network communication protocol; and

transmitting orientation history either periodically or at event-driven times in which a periodicity of a transmission of the orientation history is dependent on at least one of previous history, or current time or location of the PERS device.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

initiating the measuring of the orientation based on the acceleration measurement exceeding a predetermined acceleration.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

prior to determining that a fall event has occurred and subsequent to determining that the predetermined orientation change has been met, entering a more active monitoring state in which orientation is measured more frequently than prior to determining that the predetermined orientation change has been met,

wherein determining that a fall event has occurred is dependent on orientation measurements taken during the more active monitoring state.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

measuring biometrics of the user; and

personalizing a fall detection algorithm based on historical biometric thresholds, the historical biometric thresholds of the user being one of transferred from another PERS device associated with the user or determined by a training session with the user,

wherein when in the more active monitoring state, biometric measurements are taken more frequently than prior to entering the more active monitoring state.

16. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

measuring an altitude change, the fall event determination further based on a predetermined altitude change being exceeded.

17. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

personalizing a fall detection algorithm based on a historical user profile that indicates user activities, timing of the user activities and effects on one or more sensors, and determining, using at least one of the user profile, biometric history or a user-actuated control, which of multiple users associated with the PERS device is wearing the PERS device and adjusting the user profile and biometric history accordingly.

18. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

determining that a fall event has occurred in response to determining that multiple successive changes in orientation between adjacent orientation measurements at least meets predetermined thresholds that decrease with increasing change in orientation from an initial orientation.

19. A personal emergency reporting system (PERS) device comprising:

an orientation sensor configured to measure orientation of the PERS device;

a transceiver;

processing circuitry configured to;

initiate an orientation measurement based on at least one of timing, manual activation or a sensor detecting an abnormal condition,

receive from the orientation sensor an orientation measurement,

determine that a predetermined orientation change in a predetermined time has been met,

in response to a determination that the predetermined orientation change in the predetermined time has been met, determine whether at least one of;

a fall event has occurred, or

to enter a more active monitoring state,

in response to a determination that a fall event has occurred, determine whether another PERS device is proximate, and

in response to a determination that the other PERS device is not proximate, instruct the transceiver to transmit an alert signal to at least one of a local or remote device, the alert signal indicating that a fall event has occurred, and

in response to a determination that the other PERS device is proximate, adjust transmission of the alert signal to avoid transmitting the alert signal or to transmit a modified alert signal; and

a housing retaining the sensor, transceiver and processing circuitry and configured to be worn by a user.

20. The PERS device of claim 19, further comprising:

a memory configured to store a historical user profile that indicates user activities, timing of the user activities and effects of the user activities on one or more sensors, wherein a fall detection algorithm stored in the memory is personalized to the user based on the historical user profile,

wherein multiple users are associated with the PERS device and the processing circuitry is configured to determine, using at least one of the user profile, biometric history or a user-actuated control on the housing, which of the users is wearing the PERS device.
