1. A surgical instrument comprising an implement portion, the implement portion comprising:

  • a shaft;

    an elongate channel coupled to the shaft;

    a cartridge body positioned in the elongate channel;

    staples removably stored in the cartridge body;

    an anvil configured to deform the staples;

    a firing device, including;

    a distally presented cutting edge;

    a lower portion positioned to slidingly engage the elongate channel during a staple firing stroke, comprising;

    a lower pin comprising an upper surface configured to abut the elongate channel; and

    a middle pin comprising a lower surface configured to opposingly abut the elongate channel; and

    an upper portion positioned to slidingly engage the anvil during the staple firing stroke, wherein the lower portion and the upper portion co-operate to maintain a minimum spacing between the anvil and the elongate channel during the staple firing stroke; and

    a lockout configured to prevent the firing stroke of the firing device if the cartridge body is at least partially spent of its staples.
