Abstract

A life safety system for mitigating injuries and fatalities to occupants of a multi-zone structure comprising a plurality of controllers, and coupled to said controller, a plurality of digital imaging devices, a plurality of locking mechanisms, a plurality of dispersion points for the dispersion of at least one dispersible substance, and a plurality of thermostatic members. The life safety system further comprises at least one monitoring location physically removed from at least one of said controllers and from at least one of said dispersion points and from at least one of said locking mechanisms and from at least one of said thermostatic members.

Claims

1. A life safety system for mitigating injuries and fatalities to occupants of a multi-zone structure comprising:

a. a plurality of controllers;

b. a plurality of digital image capture devices;

c. a plurality of locking mechanisms each coupled to at least one zonal egress point and at least a subset of said plurality of locking mechanisms connected to at least one of said controllers;

d. a plurality of dispersion points for the dispersion of at least one dispersible substance, and at least a subset of said plurality of dispersion points connected to at least one of said controllers;

e. a plurality of thermostatic members at least a subset of said plurality of thermostatic members connected to at least one of said controllers;

f. at least one monitoring location physically removed from at least one of said digital image capture devices and from at least one of said controllers and from at least one of said dispersion points and from at least one of said locking mechanisms and from at least one of said thermostatic members.

The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said dispersion points is capable of dispersing a second dispersible substance which, upon contact with the vision obstruction dispersible substance will cause a chemical reaction whereby the specific gravity of the product is greater than the specific gravity of the vision obstruction dispersible substance.

The system of claim 1 further comprising communication relays amongst the components of the system permitting the system to operate at least the digital image capture devices, dispersion points and locking mechanisms to route an occupant of an identified zone within the structure to a destination by a chosen physical path.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein at least one of the destination and physical path are determined by at least one of the controllers.

5. The system of claim 3 wherein said destination is a zone internal to the structure.

6. The system of claim 3 wherein said destination is the exterior of the structure.

7. The system of claim 1 further comprising at least one instruction within at least one of the plurality of controllers, permitting the system to programmatically identify the number of occupants of a zone of the structure.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein said controller is a programmable logic controller.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein said controller comprises a microprocessor.

10. A method for mitigating injuries and fatalities to occupants of a structure comprising:

a. Identifying a plurality of zones within a building structure;

b. Installing within at least two of said plurality of zones a controller;

c. Installing within said at least two of said plurality of zones at least one digital imaging device, a locking mechanism coupled to at least one covering of a point of egress from the zone, a dispersion point for the dispersion of at least one dispersible substance and a thermostatic member;

d. Communicatively connecting the installed components within each zone to the controller of that zone;

e. Communicatively connecting each of said controllers to a main controller;

f. Identifying a threatening actor within one of said zones;

g. Configuring, through the use of at least one of said controllers, at least one of said locking mechanisms coupled to at least one covering of a point of egress from the zone, and said dispersion point for the dispersion of at least one dispersible substance, an available path of egress from the zone of the identified actor.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising routing the actor to a confined zone within the structure.

12. The method of claim 10 further comprising routing the actor to the exterior of the structure by way of the available path of egress established by the method.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the dispersible substance is a temperature-sensitive vision obstruction medium.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said step of configuring further comprises use of said thermostatic member to decrease ambient temperature of the zone and effect an increase in the density of said temperature-sensitive vision obstruction medium.

15. The method of claim 10 further comprising programmatic identification of a number of people in each zone within the structure and the programmatic computation of a path from the zone in which the identified actor is located to a destination.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein said destination is a zone internal to the structure.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein said destination is the exterior of the structure.

18. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of configuring further comprises reconfiguring said available paths of egress based upon digital data representing the presence of a hazard in or proximal to the available path or a portion of the available path.

19. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of configuring further comprises temporarily making at least a portion of said available paths inaccessible.

20. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of configuring further comprises said path of egress having a minimum number of occupants.
