1. A method comprising:

  • when a channel has been certified as complying with at least one channel specification;

    receiving information about the compliance of at least one cable used to implement the channel with at least one component specification;

    receiving information about the compliance of a permanent link used to implement the channel with at least one permanent link specification; and

    receiving information about the compliance of the channel with the at least one channel specification; and

    determining, using physical layer information associated with the at least one cable used to implement the channel at that time, if the basis for the channel being certified as being in compliance with the at least one channel specification has changed since when the channel was certified as being in compliance with the at least one channel specification, wherein the physical layer information associated with the at least one cable used to implement the channel at that time includes information stored in a storage device that is a part of the at least one cable and that identifies the cable;

    wherein the channel is implemented using a connection assembly comprising a plurality of ports, each port comprising a respective front side configured to terminate a respective patching connection at the port and a respective rear side configured to terminate a respective non-patching connection at the port, wherein the port is configured to communicatively couple the respective patching connection to the respective non-patching connection;

    wherein the at least one cable is used to make a first patching connection used to implement the channel, the first patching connecting terminating at the front side of a first one of the ports of the connection assembly;

    wherein the at least one permanent link is used to make a first non-patching connection used to implement the channel, the first non-patching connection terminating at the rear side of the first one of the ports of the connection assembly;

    wherein the first one of the ports of the connection assembly communicatively couples the first non-patching connection to the first patching connection; and

    wherein the first non-patching connection is separate from the first patching connection.
