Abstract

The present invention relates to the field of ambulatory and non-invasive monitoring of a plurality of physiological parameters of a monitored individual. The invention includes a physiological monitoring apparatus with an improved monitoring apparel, the apparel having sensors for monitoring parameters reflecting pulmonary function and/or parameters reflecting cardiac function and/or parameters reflecting the function of other organ systems. The apparel is preferably also suitable for medical, athletic, and for other uses. The sensors include one or more inductive plethysmographic sensors positioned to monitor at least basic pulmonary parameters, and optionally also basic cardiac parameters. The sensors include one or more ECG sensor electrodes that preferably include a flexible, conductive fabric. The monitoring apparatus also includes an electronic unit for receiving data from the sensors and for storing the data in a computer-readable medium and/or wirelessly transmitted the data. The invention also includes systems for receiving, storing, and processing data generated by one or more physiological monitored apparatuses.

Claims

1. A physiological monitoring garment comprising:

one or more elastic fabric portions;

one or more elongate stretchable elements disposed on the elastic fabric portions, an elongate stretchable element further including an elongate stretchable textile member and a plurality of integral conductors, woven, knitted, or braided along the length thereof in a sinusoidal pattern, the sinusoidal pattern disposed within the boundary defined by the elongate stretchable element having an upper planar surface and a lower planar surface;

a connector bridging a garment division, the garment division configured such that it divides the physiological monitoring garment along a longitudinal axis of a torso of an individual;

one or more sensors connected to the elongate stretchable element and connector, at least one of these sensors including a respiration monitoring device;

one or more electrode sensors printed on the physiological monitoring garment,

wherein the one or more electrode sensors are configured to be directly affixed to an individual at an electrode; and

a microprocessor unit having an input, wherein the microprocessor unit is configured to receive and store information inputted independent from the sensors.

2. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 1 further including at least three elastic fabric portions and at least two elongate stretchable elements.

3. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 1, wherein a first fabric portion is the upper portion of a shirt and a second fabric portion is the lower portion of the shirt.

4. A physiological monitoring garment comprising:

a fabric portion having a pocket;

an elongate stretchable element disposed on the fabric portion and including an integral conductor, woven, knitted, or braided along the length thereof;

a connector bridging a garment division, the garment division configured such that it divides the physiological monitoring garment along a longitudinal axis of a torso of an individual;

one or more sensors connected to a first end of the integral conductor through the connector, at least one of these sensors including one or more electrode sensors printed on the physiological monitoring garment,

wherein the one or more electrode sensors are configured to be directly affixed to an individual at an electrode without electrically conductive gel between the electrode and the surface of the skin; and

a microprocessor unit,

wherein a second end of the integral conductor is disposed at the pocket,

wherein the pocket is configured to retain the microprocessor unit, and

wherein the microprocessor is configured to connect to the second end of the integral conductor, to receive signals from the one or more sensors via the integral conductor, and to wirelessly transmit the signals to a remote receiving unit.

5. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 4, wherein the integral conductor is woven, knitted, or braided in a sinusoidal pattern.

6. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 5, wherein the sinusoidal pattern is disposed within the boundary defined by the elongate stretchable element having an upper planar surface and a lower planar surface.

7. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 4, wherein the sensor includes a respiration monitoring device.

8. A physiological monitoring garment comprising:

an elastic fabric portion;

at least one elongate stretchable element disposed on the elastic fabric portion, the elongate stretchable element including a plurality of longitudinally flexible integral conductors printed along a length thereof;

a connector bridging a garment division, the garment division configured such that it divides the physiological monitoring garment along a longitudinal axis of a torso of an individual;

one or more sensors connected to the elongate stretchable element through the connector, at least one of these sensors including an electrode sensor printed on the physiological monitoring garment, each sensor comprising a wireless transmitter,

wherein the electrode sensor is configured to be directly affixed to an individual at an electrode, and

a microprocessor unit comprising a wireless receiver,

wherein the wireless transmitter is configured to wirelessly transmit a signal representative of a physiological characteristic sensed by the sensor to the microprocessor unit, and

wherein the wireless transmitter transmits data at higher rates when an adverse physiological event is detected, and lower rates when an adverse physiological event is not detected.

9. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 8, wherein the plurality of conductors are disposed in a sinusoidal pattern.

10. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 9, wherein said sinusoidal pattern is disposed on a surface plane of said stretchable element.

11. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 8, wherein the sensor includes a respiration monitoring device.

12. A physiological monitoring garment comprising:

an elongate stretchable element including a plurality of longitudinally flexible integral conductors, woven, knitted, or braided along the length thereof;

a connector bridging a garment division, the garment division configured such that it divides the physiological monitoring garment along a longitudinal axis of a torso of an individual;

one or more electrode sensors connected to the elongate stretchable element through the connector,

wherein the one or more electrode sensors comprise printed electrodes printed on the physiological monitoring garment, and

wherein the one or more electrode sensors are configured to be directly affixed to an individual at an electrode without electrically conductive gel between the electrode and the surface of the skin, and

a tightening device configured for adjusting circumferential tightness of the elongate stretchable element to substantially prevent longitudinal movement of the one or more electrode sensors along the torso, and

wherein the tightening device is further configured to allow excess fabric in the circumferential direction to be gathered across the garment division.

13. A physiological monitoring garment comprising:

a first fabric portion;

a second fabric portion;

an elongate stretchable element between the first fabric portion and the second fabric portion, the elongate stretchable element including a plurality of integral conductors, woven, knitted, or braided along the length thereof in a sinusoidal pattern, the sinusoidal pattern disposed within the boundary defined by the elongate stretchable element having an upper planar surface and a lower planar surface;

a connector bridging a garment division, the garment division configured such that it divides the physiological monitoring garment along a longitudinal axis of a torso of an individual;

an electrocardiogram (ECG) electrode sensor coupled to the elongate stretchable element through the connector,

wherein the ECG electrode sensor comprises a patch of electrically conductive fibers disposed on the physiological monitoring garment, and

wherein the ECG electrode sensor is configured to be directly affixed to an individual at an electrode; and

a microprocessor comprising a wireless transmitter coupled to at least one integral conductor,

wherein the microprocessor is configured to receive first signals representative of physiological characteristics via the integral conductor, and to wirelessly transmit second signals representative of physiological characteristics to a remote data repository.

14. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 13 further including at least a third fabric portion and at least a second elongate stretchable element including a plurality of integral conductors, woven, knitted, or braided along the length thereof, and one or more sensors connected to said at least second elongate stretchable element.

15. A physiological monitoring garment comprising:

a first elastic fabric portion comprising at least one first elongate stretchable element, the first elongate stretchable element including a plurality of first integral conductors, woven, knitted, or braided along the length thereof in a sinusoidal pattern;

a second elastic fabric portion comprising at least one second elongate stretchable element, the second elongate stretchable element including a plurality of second integral conductors, woven, knitted, or braided along the length thereof in a sinusoidal pattern;

a garment division, the garment division configured such that it divides the physiological monitoring garment along a longitudinal axis of a torso of an individual;

an electrocardiogram (ECG) electrode sensor coupled to the first elongate stretchable element through the connector,

wherein the ECG electrode sensor comprises a wireless transmitter,

wherein the ECG electrode sensor is configured to be directly affixed to an individual at an electrode, and

wherein the ECG electrode sensor comprises a patch of electrically conductive fibers disposed on the physiological monitoring garment;

garment material disposed between and coupled to each of the first elastic fabric portion and the second elastic fabric portion,

wherein each of the first elastic fabric portion and the second elastic fabric portion comprises an individual tightening device, each individual tightening device configured to adjust circumferential tightness of the corresponding integral conductor such that longitudinal movement along a torso of each of the integral conductors is substantially prevented when the garment is worn; and

wherein the wireless transmitter transmits data at higher rates when an adverse physiological event is detected, and lower rates when an adverse physiological event is not detected.

16. A physiological monitoring garment comprising:

an elongate stretchable textile member;

a plurality of conductors woven, knitted, or braided along the length thereof integral with threads of the elongate stretchable textile member in a sinusoidal pattern, the sinusoidal pattern disposed within the boundary defined by the elongate stretchable element having an upper planar surface and a lower planar surface;

a connector bridging a garment division, the garment division configured such that it divides the physiological monitoring garment along a longitudinal axis of a torso of an individual; and

an electrocardiogram (ECG) electrode sensor coupled to the elongate stretchable textile member through the connector,

wherein the ECG electrode sensor is configured to be directly affixed to an individual at an electrode; and

wherein the ECG electrode sensor comprises a patch of electrically conductive fibers disposed on the physiological monitoring garment.

17. A physiological monitoring garment comprising:

an elastic material portion;

a conductive wire woven or knitted into the elastic material portion, wherein the conductive wire is arranged in the elastic material portion in a generally sinusoidal pattern, the generally sinusoidal pattern disposed within the boundary defined by the elongate stretchable element having an upper planar surface and a lower planar surface;

a connector bridging a garment division, the garment division configured such that it divides the physiological monitoring garment along a longitudinal axis of a torso of an individual;

an electrocardiogram (ECG) electrode sensor connected to the conductive wire through the connector,

wherein the ECG electrode sensor is configured to be directly affixed to an individual at an electrode;

wherein the ECG electrode sensor comprises a wireless transmitter; and

wherein the ECG electrode sensor comprises a patch of electrically conductive fibers disposed on the physiological monitoring garment; and

a microprocessor in communication with the sensor and comprising a removable memory, wherein the microprocessor is configured to receive a signal representative of a physiological characteristic sensed by the sensor and to store data representative of the physiological characteristic in the removable memory, and

wherein the wireless transmitter transmits data at higher rates when an adverse physiological event is detected, and lower rates when an adverse physiological event is not detected.

18. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 17, wherein the sensor includes a respiration monitoring device.

19. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 17, wherein the sensor includes an accelerometer.

20. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 17 further comprising a second elastic material portion and a second conductive wire woven or knitted into the second elastic material portion.

21. The physiological monitoring garment of claim 17, further comprising:

a transmitter configured to transmit signals from the conductive wire,

wherein the microprocessor is configured to receive signals from the transmitter.
