Electrosurgical medical system and method
First Claim
1. A method for delivering RF power from an electrosurgical generator to an electrosurgical electrode being used on a patient, said method comprising:
- providing an RF electrosurgical generator in a generator housing and a patient box in a patient box housing, said patient box housing disposed in close proximity to said patient and said generator housing disposed further from said patient than said patient box housing;
delivering an RF signal with a first RF power from said electrosurgical generator to said patient box;
increasing RF power of said RF signal in said patient box;
providing a common mode choke in said patient box, said common mode choke including an output winding and a return winding, said output winding comprising a wire carrying said RF signal as an output signal and said return winding comprising a duality of intertwined wires carrying a return signal from a return electrode; and
delivering said output signal with the increased RF power to said electrosurgical electrode,wherein said patient box is coupled to said electrosurgical electrode by a cable not greater than 2 meters long.

Abstract
A method for mitigating leakage in an RF electrosurgical generator includes delivering an RF signal from an RF electrosurgical generator to an electrosurgical electrode by way of a patient box; providing a balanced and symmetrical shielded transmission line coupling said electrosurgical generator disposed in a first housing to said patient box disposed in a second, different housing; providing a common mode choke in said patient box, said common mode choke including an output winding and a return winding, said output winding and said return winding spaced apart and in parallel to maintain a desired impedance, said output winding comprising a wire carrying said RF signal as an output signal and said return winding carrying a return signal from a return electrode; and directing a common mode signal from said RF signal to said common mode choke thereby blocking said common mode signal.
