1. A bag dispenser comprising:

  • a frame including a roller portion for receiving a bag roll defined by a plurality of bags attached to a leading bag to be dispensed, the roller defining a longitudinal axis; and

    a non-biased brake plate defining a weight that is heavy enough to capture the leading bag against the frame at a friction application area solely by the weight of the plate without any supplemental forces for providing frictional force on the leading bag to limit sliding thereof, the brake plate pivotally attached to the frame via a pivot arm, the brake plate freely floatable under the weight thereof so as to pivot with respect to the frame between a non-pivoted friction-application position and a pivoted bag roll installment position, the pivot arm configured to pivot with respect to the frame along a pivot plane generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis;

    wherein the brake plate includes a braking portion defining a flat, planar configuration that is configured to contact a flat, planar braking surface defined by the frame for providing the frictional force on the leading bag to be dispensed, the brake plate also including a transition portion defining a curved contact surface for guiding the leading bag from the bag roll to the friction application area defined between the flat, planar braking portion of the brake plate and the flat, planar braking surface of the frame, wherein the curved contact surface of the transition portion is configured to provide additional friction to the leading bag as the leading bag is pulled while also allowing smooth sliding motion of the leading bag.
