Abstract

An HVAC Controller may include a first sub-assembly and a second sub-assembly capable of releasably engaging the first sub-assembly. The first sub-assembly may include a first housing and a printed circuit board having a controller for providing one or more control signals, where the printed circuit board may be secured relative to the first housing. The second sub-assembly may include a second housing, a power source, one or more output terminals, and a second printed circuit board. The second printed circuit board may be secured relative to the second housing and may have circuitry thereon that is powered by the power source and configured to receive the one or more control signals from the first printed circuit board. The circuitry of the second sub-assembly may set output terminals thereof to a predetermined state when the first sub-assembly is released from the second sub-assembly.

Claims

1. An HVAC controller for controlling one or more HVAC components, the HVAC controller comprising:

a first sub-assembly comprising;

a first housing;

a first printed circuit board having a controller for providing one or more control signals, the first printed circuit board secured relative to the first housing;

a second sub-assembly configured to releasably engage the first sub-assembly, the second sub-assembly comprising;

a second housing;

a power source;

one or more output terminals; and

a second printed circuit board secured relative to the second housing, the second printed circuit board having circuitry powered by the power source and configured to receive the one or more control signals from the first printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly and to provide one or more corresponding control signals to the one or more output terminals of the second sub-assembly, the circuitry of the second printed circuit board further configured to use power from the power source of the second sub-assembly to control one or more switches to set the one or more output terminals of the second sub-assembly to a predetermined state when the first sub-assembly is released from the second sub-assembly.

2. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the one or more switches include one or more latching relays that provide the one or more corresponding control signals to the one or more output terminals of the second sub-assembly.

The HVAC controller of claim 2, wherein the circuitry of the second sub-assembly uses power from the power source of the second sub-assembly to set the state of the one or more latching relays into a configuration that provides the one or more corresponding control signals to the one or more output terminals of the second sub-assembly when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly.

4. The HVAC controller of claim 3, wherein the state of the one or more latching relays is controlled by the controller of the first sub-assembly when the first sub-assembly is engaged with the second sub-assembly.

The HVAC controller of claim 3, wherein the circuitry of the second sub-assembly uses power from the power source of the second sub-assembly to set the state of the one or more latching relays into a configuration that sets the one or more output terminals of the second sub-assembly to the predetermined state when the first sub-assembly is released from the second sub-assembly.

The HVAC controller of claim 3, wherein the circuitry of the second sub-assembly automatically sets the state of the one or more latching relays into a configuration that sets the one or more output terminals of the second sub-assembly to the predetermined state when it is detected that the first sub-assembly is released from the second sub-assembly.

7. The HVAC controller of claim 5, wherein:

the circuitry of the second sub-assembly includes one or more pull-up resistors and/or one or more pull-down resistors; and

the configuration of the latching relays is set, at least in part, by the one or more pull-up resistors and/or the one or more pull down resistors when the first sub-assembly is released from the second sub-assembly.

The HVAC controller of claim 5, wherein each of the one or more latching relays has a relay coil that controls the state of the corresponding latching relay, the relay coil having a first terminal and a second terminal, the first terminal of each relay coil is operatively coupled to a corresponding one of the control signals of the first printed circuit board when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly and is further operatively coupled to a pull-up or pull-down resistor, and the second terminal of each relay coil operatively coupled to a pull-up or pull-down resistor.

9. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the first sub-assembly further comprises a display.

10. A thermostat assembly comprising:

a first sub-assembly comprising;

a first printed circuit board having a first set of circuitry and a microprocessor electrically connected to the first set of circuitry to control an external device;

a second sub-assembly having a power source and configured to releasably engage the first sub-assembly, the second sub-assembly comprising;

a second printed circuit board having a second set of circuitry configured to turn off the external device by controlling one or more latching relays when the first sub-assembly is released from the second sub-assembly; and

wherein the second set of circuitry is configured to have the first set of circuitry of the first sub-assembly control the one or more latching relays when the first sub-assembly is releasably engaged with the second sub-assembly.

11. The thermostat assembly of claim 10, wherein:

the second set of circuitry includes one or more pull-up resistors and/or one or more pull-down resistors; and

the one or more pull-up resistors and/or the one or more pull down resistors control the one or more latching relays so as to turn off the external device when the first sub-assembly is released from the second sub-assembly.

12. A method of controlling a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system having one or more HVAC components, the method comprising:

separating a first sub-assembly from a second sub-assembly, wherein the second sub-assembly includes one or more output terminals;

with the first sub-assembly separated from the second sub-assembly, automatically setting the one or more output terminals of the second sub-assembly to a predetermined state;

engaging the first sub-assembly and the second sub-assembly;

with the first sub-assembly and the second sub-assembly engaged, providing one or more control signals to one or more HVAC components via the one or more output terminals to control an environmental condition of the inside space; and

wherein;

the first sub-assembly includes a controller for providing one or more control signals;

the second sub-assembly includes one or more latching relays;

with the first sub-assembly separated from the second sub-assembly, automatically setting the one or more latching relays so that the one or more output terminals are set to the predetermined state; and

with the first sub-assembly and the second sub-assembly engaged, controlling the one or more latching relays with the one or more control signals of the first sub-assembly so as to provide one or more corresponding control signals to the one or more HVAC components via the one or more output terminals.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein when the one or more output terminals are set to the predetermined state, the one or more HVAC components are turned off.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein, with the first sub-assembly and the second sub-assembly engaged, the one or more control signals cause causing the one or more HVAC components to cycle on and off to control the environmental condition of the inside space.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the one or more HVAC components comprises a furnace.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the one or more HVAC components comprises an air conditioning unit.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein the environmental condition is temperature.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein the environmental condition is humidity.
