1. A computerized method to generate a user interface through use of an item authority to acquire an item or a similar item using an electronic bidding service, comprising:

  • under control of one or more computers configured with specific executable instructions,receiving, from a plurality of seller computing devices over a network, a plurality of offers to sell a plurality of items and a description of respective items of the plurality of items, the description of the respective items being seller-specified descriptions of the respective items;

    determining, based on the description of the respective items, master reference information corresponding to the respective items;

    storing the plurality of offers, the description, and the master reference information corresponding to the respective items in a master item database;

    associating, by the item authority, a set of offers of the plurality of offers based at least in part on the set of offers corresponding to items with matching master reference information, wherein the item authority manages the master item database and identifies whether two or more items of the plurality of items in the master item database comprise same or similar items;

    generating the user interface through which bidding information on an item can be specified, wherein the user interface comprises a first user interface in which a customer can select a specific offer and a second user interface in which the customer can select criteria governing a bidding process and wherein the item is associated with master reference information comprising at least an identifying code associated with the item;

    transmitting the user interface to a customer device associated with the customer, wherein the customer device is different from the plurality of seller computing devices;

    receiving, via the user interface, the bidding information that expresses a bid to acquire the item through an initial offer and that comprises shipping information pertaining to a shipment of the item;

    identifying, by the item authority, a first set of offers of the plurality of offers corresponding to one or more items associated with an identifying code that match the identifying code associated with the item;

    if that the identifying the first set of offers is not successful, then identifying, by the item authority, a second set of offers of the plurality of offers, the second set of offers corresponding to one or more similar items associated with a second identifying code relating to the identifying code associated with the item, wherein a relation between identifying codes corresponds to respective items associated with the identifying codes being similar;

    bidding on the first set of offers based at least in part on the bidding information;

    andbased at least partly on a determination that no bid on the first set of offers was successful, automatically bidding on the one or more similar items corresponding to the second set of offers without receiving additional information from the customer device.
