1. A device accommodating line and battery power, comprising:
- a main processor;
a power management interface;
a memory storing a plurality of digitally encoded number strings operatively coupled to the main processor;
a cryptographic element operatively coupled to the memory; and
a memory device that stores instructions executable by the main processor to;
detect coupling of a battery;
send, using the cryptographic element, an encrypted message derived from one of the plurality of digitally encoded number strings to the battery;
receive, from the battery, an indication of recognition; and
manipulate an exchange of power with the battery based upon the indication of recognition received;
wherein the main processor of the device supports a plurality of states of system power management through the power management interface; and
wherein an encrypted message is sent responsive to each transition from one power state to another power state of the device.

Abstract
Improved handling of battery recognition tasks in an electronic device such as a cell phone, smart phone, computer system, recording device or others is facilitated. Recognition of a battery so as to enable exchange of power between the device and the battery is determined by a match between one of a plurality of number strings stored in the device and the decrypted response to an encrypted challenge derived from the one of stored number string.

10. An apparatus, comprising:
-
a power management interface; an electronic device accommodating line and battery power and incorporating a first cryptographic element and digital memory; and a plurality of digitally encoded number strings stored in said electronic device digital memory; said first cryptographic element cooperating to exchange encrypted messages derived from one of the digitally encoded number strings with a battery so that a matched exchange enables the electronic device to recognize a battery and exchange electrical power with the battery; and said apparatus supporting a plurality of states of system power management through the power management interface; wherein exchange of encrypted messages occurs in response to each transition from one power state of the apparatus to another power state. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)
