1. A method comprising:
- broadcasting a first message requesting one or more nodes to respond;
examining one or more responses to the first message to select from the response one or more nodes to act as first proxies;
causing sending of second messages from the one or more first proxies requesting one or more non-proxy nodes to respond;
examining one or more responses to the second messages to select from the responses one or more nodes to act as second proxies, wherein the response to the second message includes a measure of a first signal strength of the second messages received at the non-proxy nodes responding to the second message, and wherein the selecting takes into account the first signal strength and a second signal strength of the response form the second message;
creating a table of meter nodes including which proxies, if any, are used to reach each meter node; and
storing the table in memory.

Abstract
A method for automated topology discovery and management of meter nodes in a power grid is described. In the discovery mode any of the meter nodes is able to act as a proxy for a data concentrator to sort out the topology, and to determine the best path for communicating between a concentrator and each of the meter nodes.

-
broadcasting a first message requesting one or more nodes to respond; examining one or more responses to the first message to select from the response one or more nodes to act as first proxies; causing sending of second messages from the one or more first proxies requesting one or more non-proxy nodes to respond; examining one or more responses to the second messages to select from the responses one or more nodes to act as second proxies, wherein the response to the second message includes a measure of a first signal strength of the second messages received at the non-proxy nodes responding to the second message, and wherein the selecting takes into account the first signal strength and a second signal strength of the response form the second message; creating a table of meter nodes including which proxies, if any, are used to reach each meter node; and storing the table in memory. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4)

5. A method, comprising:
-
sending a first outbound message having a first field identifying a first range of identification (ID) numbers to a plurality of nodes; receiving a first inbound message from one of the plurality of nodes identified by the first range, the first inbound message having an indication of route quality including first signal strength (SSI1) of a received first outbound message; sending a second outbound message having a second field identifying a second range of ID numbers; receiving a second inbound message from one of the nodes identified by the second range, the second inbound message having an indication of the route quality including second signal strength (SSI0) of a received second outbound message; selecting from the first and second inbound messages a node to act as a proxy for sending messages to other nodes, wherein the selecting considers the first and second SSI0s and third signal strengths of the inbound messages; determining from the second inbound messages and the route quality information which nodes are directly addressable and which require addressing by hopping through intermediate nodes; and preparing a list of meter nodes identified by their ID numbers which includes an addressing route for each node. - View Dependent Claims (6)

7. A method comprising:
-
sending a plurality of messages to a plurality of meter nodes; receiving a plurality of messages from the meter nodes, each message including an indication of a number of hops required to reach a particular meter node; selecting, by a concentrator, one or more of the meter nodes as a test point when the meter node appears to be located on a boundary of a topology of the meter nodes; and examining the received messages to select at least one communication route to each of the meter nodes based in part on outbound signal strength and inbound signal strength of the sent and received messages, wherein each meter node has an ID number and a number messages to be received from the meter nodes is limited by a hash value of each ID, wherein the hash is a summation of bytes of the ID to provide the number of messages supported. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9)
