1. A system comprising:

  • a substrate defining a pore and including four voltage carrying regions disposed along the pore;

    a plurality of interconnects, each interconnect of the plurality of interconnects uniquely connected to a voltage carrying region of the four voltage carrying regions;

    a plurality of power supplies in electrical communication with the plurality of interconnects, each power supply of the plurality of power supplies defining potential differences between a unique pair of voltage carrying regions selected from the four voltage carrying regions; and

    a plurality of meters to measure a difference in electrical characteristics between a pair of voltage carrying regions of the unique pairs of voltage carrying regions, wherein the electrical characteristic is responsive to a base sequence of a nucleic acid.
