1. A voice controlled apparatus included in a wireless device, comprising:

  • a processor;

    a plurality of sensors located along one or more edges of the wireless device, the plurality of sensors configured to facilitate sampling one or more signals indicative of whether the wireless device is in a hands-on state by a user;

    a microphone configured to receive voice commands from the user; and

    a controller coupled to the plurality of sensors, the microphone, and the processor, the controller configured to initiate, via the processor, a voice activated detection (VAD) application that interprets voice commands on the basis of the one or more signals.
