Abstract

An example of a system may include electrodes on at least one lead configured to be operationally positioned for use in modulating neural tissue where the neural tissue including dorsal horn tissue or nerve root tissue, a neural modulation generator, and a controller. The neural modulation generator may be configured to use at least some electrodes to generate a modulation field. The neural modulation generator maybe configured to use a programmed modulation parameter set to promote uniformity of the modulation field in the dorsal horn tissue. The controller may be configured to control the neural modulation generator to generate the modulation field in pulse trains of at least two pulses.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

modulating neural tissue including dorsal horn tissue or nerve root tissue, including generating a modulation field using electrodes, wherein generating the modulation field includes generating the modulation field in pulse trains of at least two pulses, and further includes using a modulation parameter set to promote uniformity of the modulation field, for each of the at least two pulses, for a distance across the neural tissue corresponding to a length of an electrode span adjacent to the neural tissue, the electrode span including two or more of the electrodes.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein each pulse train has a duration less than 100 ms.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein each pulse train has a duration more than 2 ms and less than 50 ms.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein a time between successive pulse trains is more than a duration of each of the successive pulse trains.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein each pulse train has less than 10 pulses.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein each pulse train has pulse train has an interpulse duration within a range of 2 ms to 5 ms.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein generating the modulation field includes generating an approximately constant electric field in the dorsal horn tissue using the modulation parameter set to promote uniformity of the electric field in one or more orientations within the neural tissue.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein generating the modulation field includes using the modulation parameter set to fractionalize current among the electrodes to promote uniformity of the modulation field in the neural tissue.

9. A method, comprising:

modulating dorsal horn tissue, including generating an approximately constant electric field in the dorsal horn tissue using electrodes, wherein generating the approximately constant electric field includes generating the electric field in pulse trains of at least two pulses with a pulse train duration of less than 100 ms, and using a modulation parameter set to promote uniformity of the electric field along at least a portion of the dorsal horn tissue for each of the at least two pulses, wherein generating the electric field includes using the stimulation parameter set to fractionalize current among the electrodes to promote uniformity of the electric field for a distance across the dorsal horn tissue corresponding to a length an electrode span adjacent to the dorsal horn tissue, the electrodes span including two or more of the electrodes.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the pulse train duration of each pulse train is more than 2 ms and less than 50 ms.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein a total number of pulses in each pulse train is less than 10 pulses in each pulse train.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein each pulse train has pulse with an interpulse duration within a range of 2 ms to 5 ms, and a time between successive pulse trains is more than the interpulse duration of each pulse train.

13. A system, comprising:

electrodes on at least one lead configured to be operationally positioned for use modulating neural tissue, the neural tissue including dorsal horn tissue or nerve root tissue;

a neural modulation generator configured to use at least some of the electrodes to generate a modulation field, the neural modulation generator configured to use a programmed modulation parameter set to promote uniformity of the modulation field for a distance across the neural tissue corresponding to a length of an electrode span adjacent to the dorsal horn tissue, the electrode span including two or more of the electrodes on the at least one lead; and

a controller configured to control the neural modulation generator to generate the modulation field in pulse trains of at least two pulses.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein a time between successive pulse trains is more than the duration of each pulse train.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the duration of each pulse train is less than 100 ms.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein the duration of each pulse train is more than 2 ms and less than 50 ms.

17. The system of claim 13, wherein each pulse train has less than 10 pulses.

18. The system of claim 13, wherein each pulse train has pulse train has an interpulse duration within a range of 2 ms to 5 ms, and a time between successive pulse trains is more than the interpulse duration of each pulse train.

19. The system of claim 13, wherein generating the modulation field includes generating an approximately constant electric field in the dorsal horn tissue using the modulation parameter set to promote uniformity of the electric field in one or more orientations within the neural tissue.

20. The system of claim 13, wherein the neural modulation generator is configured to use the modulation parameter set to fractionalize current among at least some electrodes to promote uniformity of the modulation field in the neural tissue.
