Abstract

A steerable laser probe may include an actuation structure, a nosecone fixed to the actuation structure by one or more links and one or more link pins, a housing tube having a first housing tube portion with a first stiffness and a second housing tube portion with a second stiffness, and an optic fiber disposed in the housing tube and the actuation structure. A compression of the actuation structure may be configured to gradually curve the housing tube and the optic fiber. A decompression of the actuation structure may be configured to gradually straighten the housing tube and the optic fiber.

Claims

1. A laser probe comprising:

a handle having a handle distal end and a handle proximal end;

an optic fiber guide of the handle;

an optic fiber housing of the handle;

an actuation structure of the handle;

a nosecone of the handle having a nosecone distal end and a nosecone proximal end;

a housing tube housing of the nosecone;

a housing tube having a housing tube distal end and a housing tube proximal end, the housing tube proximal end disposed in the housing tube housing;

a first housing tube portion of the housing tube having a first stiffness;

a second housing tube portion of the housing tube having a second stiffness wherein the second stiffness is greater than the first stiffness;

a plurality of apertures of the first housing tube portion;

a piston having a piston distal end and a piston proximal end;

an inner hypodermic tube having an inner hypodermic tube distal end and an inner hypodermic tube proximal end wherein the inner hypodermic tube is disposed in the actuation structure of the handle and the piston; and

an optic fiber having an optic fiber distal end and an optic fiber proximal end, the optic fiber disposed in the optic fiber guide, the optic fiber housing, and the housing tube wherein the optic fiber distal end is adjacent to the housing tube distal end and wherein a first portion of the optic fiber is fixed to an inner portion of the housing tube and wherein a second portion of the optic fiber is fixed in the optic fiber housing and wherein a compression of the actuation structure is configured to extend the piston relative to the handle proximal end and extend the housing tube relative to the optic fiber and curve the housing tube.

2. The laser probe of claim 1 wherein the compression of the actuation structure is configured to curve the optic fiber relative to the housing tube proximal end.

3. The laser probe of claim 2 wherein the compression of the actuation structure is configured to curve the optic fiber at least 45 degrees relative to the housing tube proximal end.

4. The laser probe of claim 1 wherein the compression of the actuation structure is configured to apply a force to a portion of the housing tube.

5. The laser probe of claim 1 wherein the compression of the actuation structure is configured to compress the first housing tube portion.

6. The laser probe of claim 1 wherein the compression of the actuation structure is configured to extend the nosecone relative to the handle proximal end.

7. The laser probe of claim 1 wherein a decompression of the actuation structure is configured to straighten the optic fiber relative to the housing tube proximal end.

8. The laser probe of claim 7 wherein the decompression of the actuation structure is configured to straighten the housing tube.

9. The laser probe of claim 8 wherein the decompression of the actuation structure is configured to straighten the optic fiber at least 45 degrees relative to the housing tube proximal end.

10. The laser probe of claim 8 wherein the decompression of the actuation structure is configured to retract the housing tube relative to the optic fiber.

11. The laser probe of claim 10 wherein the decompression of the actuation structure is configured to reduce a force applied to a portion of the housing tube.

12. The laser probe of claim 11 wherein the decompression of the actuation structure is configured to decompress the first housing tube portion.

13. The laser probe of claim 1 wherein a decompression of the actuation structure is configured to retract the nosecone relative to the handle proximal end.

14. The laser probe of claim 1 further comprising:

a buffer of the optic fiber; and

a cladding of the optic fiber, the cladding disposed in the buffer.

15. The laser probe of claim 14 wherein the buffer is configured to protect an optical layer of the optic fiber.

16. The laser probe of claim 14 wherein the buffer is manufactured from a polyimide.

17. The laser probe of claim 16 wherein the buffer is manufactured from Kapton.

18. The laser probe of claim 1 further comprising:

a slight curve of the housing tube.
