System and method for using object recognition to facilitate the collection of insurance information
First Claim
1. A computer-implemented method comprising:
- providing, by one or more processors and via an Internet link, an existing or potential insurance policyholder an electronic insurance form including at least a first field, the first field being associated with a query for which an accurate response depends upon a type of an object associated with the insurance policyholder, whereinproviding the insurance policyholder the electronic insurance form includes providing a client device of the insurance policyholder software instructions that, when interpreted by a web browser application executing on the client device, cause the client device to (i) render the electronic insurance form within a web browser of the client device for display to the insurance policyholder and (ii) display, within the web browser, a user-interactive control that is associated with the first field and allows the insurance policyholder to submit one or more images;
receiving an image of the object from the insurance policyholder via the user-interactive control and the Internet link;
processing, by one or more processors, the image of the object according to an object recognition technique to identify physical features of the object, wherein the physical features include a ratio between different dimensions of an element of the object, and further include one or both of (i) a spacing between elements of the object, and (ii) a pattern created by elements of the object;
using, by one or more processors, the identified physical features to determine the type of the object, at least by comparing the physical features to physical features known to correspond to the type of the object; and
providing, by one or more processors and via the Internet link, the insurance policyholder an indication of the determined type of the object to facilitate entry of accurate information in the first field, wherein providing the indication of the determined type of the object includes at least one of (i) automatically populating the first field within the web browser in accordance with the determined type, or (ii) causing the web browser to generate a pop-up window indicating the determined type.

Abstract
In a computer-implemented method, an insurance policyholder may be provided an electronic insurance form including at least a first field, the first field being associated with a query for which an accurate response depends on a type of an object associated with the insurance policyholder. An image of the object may be received. The image of the object may be processed according to an object recognition technique to identify at least one characteristic of the image of the object. The identified characteristic(s) may be used to determine the type of the object, and the insurance policyholder may be provided an indication of the determined type of the object to facilitate manual or automatic entry of accurate information in the first field. Additionally or alternatively, the indication of the determined type of the object may be automatically entered in the first field. An insurance policy or quote may be adjusted accordingly.
