Abstract

A system, method, and computer readable medium for managing CDN service providers are provided. A network storage provider storing one or more resources on behalf of a content provider obtains client computing device requests for content. The network storage provider processes the client computing device requests and determines whether a subsequent request for the resource should be directed to a CDN service provider as a function of the updated or processed by the network storage provider storage component.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

obtaining, from a client computing device, a domain name system (DNS) query for a resource maintained by a network storage service provider on behalf of a content provider; and

in response to the DNS query;

determining, at a DNS server, one or more service providers associated with a quality of service for providing the resource; and

transmitting one of a resource identifier corresponding to a content delivery network (CDN) service provider or an IP address of a storage component associated with the network storage service provider, wherein selection of the resource identifier or the IP address for transmission is determined based at least in part on a quality of service threshold.

The method as recited in claim 1, wherein transmitting one of a resource identifier corresponding to a CDN service provider or an IP address of a storage component associated with the network storage service provider is further based at least in part on at least one other request routing criterion.

3. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein the at least one other request routing criterion includes a trend regarding an increase in requests from client computing devices for the resource and a trend regarding a decrease in requests from client computing devices for the resource.

4. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein the at least one other request routing criterion includes cost information.

5. The method as recited in claim 4, wherein the cost information includes financial cost information attributable to the content provider.

The method as recited in claim 4, wherein transmitting one of an alternative resource identifier corresponding to a CDN service provider or an IP address of a storage component associated with the network storage service provider includes determining a service provider associated with a lowest financial cost for providing the resource.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising causing the registration of a CDN service provider such that the CDN service provider will begin providing the resource.

8. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the alternative resource identifier corresponds to a CNAME.

9. A computer-implemented method comprising:

as implemented by one or more computing devices associated with a network storage service provider and configured with specific executable instructions, the network storage service provider maintaining resources on behalf of a content provider;

obtaining a DNS query from a client computing device, the DNS query corresponding to a request for a resource; and

providing, by a DNS server associated with the network storage service provider, an alternative resource identifier responsive to the DNS query, the alternative resource identifier associated with a content delivery network (CDN) service provider and selected based at least in part on a quality of service threshold for providing the resource; and

wherein the alternative resource identifier is provided as an alternative to identifying an IP address of a storage component of the network storage service provider.

10. The method as recited in claim 9, wherein the alternative resource identifier is selected further based on at least one of a characteristic of the content provider or a characteristic of the client computing device.

11. The method as recited in claim 9, wherein the quality of service threshold is selected by the content provider.

12. The method as recited in claim 9 further comprising causing the registration of a CDN service provider such that the CDN service provider will begin providing the resource.

13. The method as recited in claim 9, wherein the alternative resource identifier corresponds to a CNAME.

15. The system as recited in claim 12, wherein providing the selected resource identifier corresponding to a CDN service provider is further based on at least one other request routing criterion.

16. The system as recited in claim 13, wherein the at least one other request routing criterion comprises financial cost information.

17. The system as recited in claim 12, wherein the one or more computing devices is further operative to cause the registration of the CDN service provider such that the CDN service provider will begin providing the resource.

18. The system as recited in claim 15, wherein the registration of the CDN service provider is completed automatically without requiring additional interaction from the content provider.

19. The system as recited in claim 12, wherein the selected resource identifier corresponds to a CNAME.

20. The system as recited in claim 12, wherein the resource corresponds to an embedded resource.

14. A system comprising:

one or more computing devices associated with a network storage service provider, the one or more computing devices operative to;

obtain a domain name system (DNS) query from a client computing device, the DNS query corresponding to a request for a resource maintained by the network storage service provider on behalf of a content provider; and

in response to the DNS query;

determine one or more service providers associated with a quality of service for providing the resource;

select, at a DNS server associated with the network storage service provider, a resource identifier associated with a content delivery network (CDN) service provider based at least in part on a quality of service threshold; and

provide the selected resource identifier, wherein the selected resource identifier is provided as an alternative to identifying an IP address associated with the network storage service provider.
