A method for controlling a drive of a vertical mill performing a grinding process, with the vertical mill having a grinding plate rotatable about a vertical axis and drivable by at least one electric motor and a drivetrain comprising at least one gearbox,measuring an actual rotational speed of the drivetrain and a drivetrain torque or a dynamics of the drivetrain torque,supplying the measured actual rotational speed of the drivetrain and the measured drivetrain torque or the measured dynamics of the drivetrain torque to a control device, together with a predefined target rotational speed,generating with the control device an output signal for a target torque based on the measured actual rotational speed of the drivetrain and the measured drivetrain torque or the measured dynamics of the drivetrain torque in such a manner that the resulting target torque is reduced or increased in an identical direction as a torque resulting from the grinding process.
