1. A method for carrying out steps of a nucleic acid sequencing protocol, said method comprising:

  • a) providing;

    i) a flow cell comprising nucleic acids to be sequenced, said flow cell mounted on ii) a moveable support, said support configured to move said flow cell to iii) a detection station, said station comprising iv) a vertical actuator fitted with v) a gripper configured to grasp the flow cell and lift it off the moveable support;

    b) moving said moveable support to said detection station;

    c) grasping the flow cell with said gripper; and

    d) lifting said flow cell off of the moveable support with said vertical actuator, so as to create a lifted flow cell.
