1. A method of charging a rechargeable battery to a full state of the battery comprising:

  • providing a fuel gauge that predicts the open circuit voltage of the battery responsive to at least one of a terminal voltage of the battery or current to and from of the battery, even when the battery is under a load or being charged;

    monitoring the at least one of the terminal voltage of the battery or the current in and out of the battery;

    charging the battery to a terminal voltage exceeding a predetermined full state battery voltage; and

    terminating the charging of the battery when the predicted open circuit voltage is equal to a predetermined full state battery voltage.
