1. An apparatus for a user equipment (UE), the apparatus comprising:

  • memory; and

    processing circuitry to;

    determine whether to use extended idle mode discontinuous reception (DRX) based on delay tolerance of communications;

    decode a system information block (SIB) received from an evolved NodeB (eNB) indicating whether the eNB supports extended idle mode DRX;

    encode a non-access stratum (NAS) message for transmission to the eNB indicating that the UE is requesting to use extended idle mode DRX;

    receive an extended idle mode DRX cycle length in response to transmission of the NAS message if the network supports extended idle mode DRX; and

    monitor for paging transmissions according to the extended idle mode DRX cycle length if the network supports extended idle mode DRX and continue to use regular DRX parameters otherwise.
