1. A neural probe, comprising:

  • a semiconductor substrate comprising a back end and one or more elongated shanks for penetrating neural tissue, each elongated shank comprising a proximal end and a distal end and at least one optical source located proximate the distal end of one or more elongated shanks such that, when the probe is implanted, the neural tissue may be illuminated without the use of an optical waveguide; and

one or more microelectrodes located proximate the distal end of one or more of the elongated shanks, wherein the at least one optical source comprises a buffer layer, an active semiconductor layer comprising a III-V semiconductor selected from the group consisting of GaN, GaAs, InP, and AlGaN, and a passivation layer.
