Abstract

An automated at-the-pump method manages vehicle fuel purchases at a fuel station. The method includes transmitting driver identification data to a mobile device assigned to a vehicle driver. The driver identification data is electronically verified to confirm that the driver identification data received by the mobile device matches the assigned vehicle driver. Vehicle data is transmitted from a data bus of the vehicle to the mobile device for storage in the memory. The vehicle data and driver identification data are transmitted to a remote terminal. Using the remote terminal, the vehicle data and driver identification data are electronically authenticated. An authorization signal is then transmitted from the remote terminal to an at-the-pump fuel control terminal.

Claims

1. An automated at-the-pump method for managing vehicle fuel purchases at a fuel station, said method comprising:

electronically storing driver identification data on an electronic data storage device;

transmitting the driver identification data from the electronic data storage device to a mobile device assigned to a vehicle driver, the mobile device comprising wireless communication hardware, an input means, a processor, a memory, and a user identifier stored in the memory;

electronically verifying that the driver identification data received by the mobile device matches the user identifier stored in the memory of the mobile device;

recording event setting data in the memory of the mobile device;

transmitting vehicle data from a data bus of the vehicle to the mobile device;

transmitting the vehicle data and driver identification data from the mobile device to a remote terminal;

using the remote terminal, electronically authenticating the vehicle data and driver identification data;

transmitting an authorization signal from the remote terminal to an at-the-pump fuel control terminal, the authorization signal enabling a dispensing of fuel from a station pump to the vehicle; and

after the vehicle is fueled, transmitting fuel purchase data from the at-the-pump fuel control terminal to at least one of the remote terminal and mobile device.

2. The method according to claim 1, and comprising electronically storing the driver identification data on an RFID card.

3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the driver identification data comprises at least one in a group consisting of first and last name, e-mail address, and telephone number.

4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the input means of the mobile device comprises a keypad, and wherein the step of electronically verifying comprises matching a passcode entered by the driver using the keypad of the mobile device to a passcode stored in memory of the mobile device.

The method according to claim 3, wherein the input means of the mobile device comprises a microphone, and wherein the step of electronically verifying comprises matching a voice code spoken by the driver into the microphone of the mobile device to a voice code stored in memory of the mobile device.

6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of electronically verifying comprises reading biometric data of the vehicle driver and matching the biometric data to data stored in memory of the mobile device.

7. The method according to claim 6, wherein the biometric data is selected from a group consisting of facial, retinal, and thumb print identifiers.

8. The method according to claim 1, wherein the event setting data comprises at least one in a group consisting of time, date, and location.

9. The method according to claim 1, wherein the vehicle data comprises at least one in a group consisting of fuel level, vehicle mileage, trailer identification, engine VIN, and diagnostic fault codes.

10. The method according to claim 1, wherein the vehicle data bus comprises at least one in a group consisting of RS232, SAE J1708, SAE J1850, SAE J1939, SAE J2497, OB-2, and CAN.

11. The method according to claim 1, wherein the fuel purchase data comprises at least one in a group consisting of gallons of fuel purchased, cost per gallon, and total fuel cost.

12. The method according to claim 1, and comprising storing the fuel purchase data on an electronic on-board recorder in the vehicle.

13. The method according to claim 1, and comprising storing the vehicle data on an electronic on-board recorder in the vehicle.

14. The method according to claim 1, and comprising storing the driver identification data on an electronic on-board recorder in the vehicle.

15. The method according to claim 1, and comprising, after the vehicle is fueled, transmitting the fuel purchase data from the at-the-pump fuel control terminal to the electronic on-board recorder in the vehicle.

16. The method according to claim 1, wherein transmitting vehicle data from the data bus of the vehicle to the mobile device comprises utilizing wireless near-field communication technology.

17. The method according to claim 1, and comprising transmitting vehicle data from the mobile device to the at-the-pump fuel control terminal.

18. The method according to claim 17, wherein transmitting vehicle data from the mobile device to the at-the-pump fuel control terminal comprises utilizing wireless near-field communication technology.

19. The method according to claim 1, and comprising transmitting the fuel purchase data from the at-the-pump fuel control terminal to the mobile device utilizing wireless near-field communication technology.

20. The method according to claim 1, wherein data is communicated between the mobile device and the at-the-pump fuel control terminal utilizing a wireless connection selected from a group consisting of a WIFI connection, a BLUETOOTH connection, and an infrared connection.
