Abstract

A surface cleaning apparatus is provided wherein at least one of an upstream air plenum that is positioned upstream of the pre-motor filter, and a downstream air plenum that is positioned downstream of the pre-motor filter comprises an end wall spaced from the pre-motor filter and comprises a first portion having an air flow port and a second portion proximate the outer perimeter of the pre-motor filter, wherein the first portion and the second portion meet at a first juncture that extends at an angle to the first portion and the second portion.

Claims

1. A surface cleaning apparatus comprising

(a) a body housing a suction motor;

(b) a cyclone bin assembly comprising at least one cyclone having a cyclone chamber having a bottom and a cyclone air outlet;

(c) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet and including the suction motor and the cyclone bin assembly;

(d) a pre-motor filter housing having an upstream air plenum, a downstream air plenum and a pre-motor filter positioned between the upstream air plenum and the downstream air plenum, the pre-motor filter having an outer perimeter and positioned in the air flow path between the at least one cyclone and the suction motor, wherein the pre-motor filter consists of at least one physical filter media;

(e) the upstream air plenum is positioned immediately upstream of the pre-motor filter wherein the upstream air plenum comprises an upstream air plenum end wall spaced from the pre-motor filter and comprising a first upstream air plenum end wall portion having an air flow port in flow communication with the cyclone air outlet and a second upstream air plenum end wall portion proximate the outer perimeter of the pre-motor filter, wherein the cyclone air outlet comprises a cyclone air outlet portion that is flared outwardly in an air flow direction therethrough and wherein the cyclone air outlet portion defines a portion of the cyclone chamber and a portion of the upstream air plenum; and

,

(f) an air flow conduit connected to the air flow port, wherein the downstream air plenum comprises a downstream air plenum end wall spaced from the pre-motor filter and comprising a first downstream air plenum end wall portion having an air flow port and a second downstream air plenum end wall portion proximate the outer perimeter of the pre-motor filter, the air flow port of the first downstream air plenum end wall portion comprises an air outlet port that is aligned with a suction motor inlet.

2. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first upstream air plenum end wall portion extends generally laterally and has an outer end and an inner end proximate the air flow port of the first upstream air plenum end wall.

3. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 2 wherein the first upstream air plenum end wall portion between the inner and outer ends is generally straight.

4. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 2 wherein the outer end is closer to the pre-motor filter then the inner end.

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the suction motor has a fan blade having a direction of rotation and the downstream air plenum further comprises a plurality of vanes that are configured to induce a rotational flow of air in the same direction as the direction of rotation of the fan blade.

6. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the end wall of the upstream air plenum has an absence of discontinuities.

7. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the upstream air plenum end wall is flared in shape.

8. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the upstream air plenum end wall is continuously curved.

9. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first downstream air plenum end wall portion and the second downstream air plenum end wall portion meet at a first juncture that extends at an angle to the first downstream air plenum end wall portion and wherein the second downstream air plenum end wall portion and the air flow conduit meet at a second juncture.

10. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cyclone has a cyclone air inlet and a dirt outlet, the cyclone air inlet is located at an end of the cyclone chamber having the cyclone air outlet and the dirt outlet is provided at an opposed end of the cyclone chamber.

11. A surface cleaning apparatus comprising

(a) a body housing a suction motor;

(b) a cyclone bin assembly comprising at least one cyclone having a cyclone chamber wherein an air outlet of the at least one cyclone is flared outwardly in an air flow direction therethrough;

(c) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet and including the suction motor and a cyclone bin assembly;

(d) a pre-motor filter housing having an upstream air plenum, a downstream air plenum and a pre-motor filter positioned between the upstream air plenum and the downstream air plenum, the pre-motor filter having an outer perimeter and positioned in the air flow path between the at least one cyclone and the suction motor wherein the pre-motor filter consist of at least one physical filter media;

(e) the downstream air plenum is positioned downstream of the pre-motor filter wherein the downstream air plenum comprises a downstream air plenum end wall spaced from the pre-motor filter and comprising a first downstream air plenum end wall portion having an air flow port and a second downstream air plenum end wall portion proximate the outer perimeter of the pre-motor filter, the air flow port comprises an air outlet conduit that is aligned with a suction motor inlet and the air flow conduit comprises a suction motor inlet; and

,

(f) the upstream air plenum comprises an upstream air plenum end wall spaced from the pre-motor filter, the upstream air plenum end wall comprises a portion of the air outlet of the at least one cyclone that is flared outwardly, wherein a volume between the air outlet of the at least one cyclone and the pre-motor filter is an uninterrupted contiguous space.

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 wherein the first downstream air plenum end wall portion and the second downstream air plenum end wall portion meet at a first juncture that extends at an angle to the first downstream air plenum end wall portion and the second downstream air plenum end wall portion, and the first juncture is rounded.

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 wherein an air flow conduit is connected to the air flow port, wherein the air flow conduit and the upstream air plenum end wall meet at a second juncture, wherein the second juncture extends at an angle to both the air flow conduit and the upstream air plenum end wall and wherein the second juncture defines part of the cyclone chamber and the upstream air plenum, and the second juncture is rounded.

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 13 wherein the first downstream air plenum end wall portion and the second downstream air plenum end wall portion meet at a first juncture that extends at an angle to the first downstream air plenum end wall portion and the second downstream air plenum end wall portion, and the first juncture is rounded.

15. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 14 wherein the first juncture has a radius that is proximate a radius of the second juncture.

16. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 wherein the suction motor inlet is trumpet shaped.

17. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 wherein the cyclone has a cyclone air inlet and a dirt outlet, the cyclone air inlet is located at an end of the cyclone chamber and the dirt outlet is provided at an opposed end of the cyclone chamber.

18. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 17 wherein the dirt outlet is provided in a sidewall of the cyclone.

19. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 wherein a cyclone air inlet is provided at an end of the cyclone having a vortex finder.
