Abstract

A convertible display includes a number of video display panels which are movable between a first position in which the panels extend in the same plane to define a unified display and a configuration in which one or more of the panels are moved into other planes which allow them to form steps. Multiple of the rotated panels may form a sequence of steps, e.g. a staircase. The convertible display may be moved via a robotic mount, whereby the position or orientation of the convertible display may be changed.

Claims

1. A convertible display comprising:

a support structure;

a plurality of video display panels connected to said support structure, each video display panel having a display face, said plurality of video display panels when in a first position having their display faces positioned in a first common plane and cooperating to define a generally planar unified display;

two or more of said video display panels movably mounted to said support structure; and

at least one drive which moves said two or more video display panels from said first position to a second position in which said display faces of said two or more video display panels are in separate planes from one another, the separate planes are also offset at an angle relative to said first common plane; and

a bellows which conceals a space below each of said two or more video display panels when in said second position.

2. The convertible display in accordance with claim 1 wherein all of said video display panels are movably mounted.

3. The convertible display in accordance with claim 1 wherein said support structure is mounted to a single robotic mount, said robotic mount movable in 6 degrees of freedom.

The convertible display in accordance with claim 3 wherein said robotic mount comprises a base, a moveable support connected to said base, said moveable support comprising at least a first portion, a second portion and a third portion, each of said first, second and third portions movable relative to one another and each portion moveable about at least one axis, whereby said moveable support is movable about each of an x axis, a y axis and a z axis which are all perpendicular to one another, and at least one motor moving said first, second and third portions of said moveable support.

5. The convertible display in accordance with claim 1 wherein said two or more video display panels are mounted for pivotal movement relative to said support structure.

6. The convertible display in accordance with claim 5 wherein said at least one drive causes said two or more video display panels to pivot from said first position to said second position.

7. The convertible display in accordance with claim 4 further comprising a controller which controls said at least one robotic mount and said at least one drive in cooperation with one another.

8. The convertible display in accordance with claim 1 wherein said at least one drive moves said two or more video display panels in unison.

9. The convertible display in accordance with claim 1 wherein said two or more video display panels are connected to one another by said at least one drive.

The convertible display in accordance with claim 1 wherein said support structure comprises a generally planar support panel having a top and a bottom, one of said plurality of video display panels located at said top of said support panel and another of said plurality of video display panels located at said bottom of said support panel.

11. The convertible display in accordance with claim 10 wherein said support panel is positioned in a second plane which is parallel to, but offset from said first common plane.

12. The convertible display in accordance with claim 10 wherein said plurality of video display panels are located at a front of said support panel.

13. A convertible display configurable as a flat panel display or as a staircase, comprising:

a support structure;

a plurality of video display panels having a display face, a top edge and a bottom edge and first and second ends, said plurality of video display panels positioned adjacent to one another in a stacked relationship, and each of said video display panels are mounted via a pivoting connection to said support structure for pivoting movement around an axis extending generally along said top edge of said video display panel; and

at least one drive which moves said plurality of video display panels from a first position in which said display face of each of said plurality of video display panels are located in a common plane wherein a top edge of one video display panel is positioned adjacent to a bottom edge of an adjacent display panel, whereby said plurality of video display panels form a unitary flat video display, to a second position in which each of said video display panels are pivoted about said axis so that the bottom edge of each video display panel rotates away from the top edge of the adjacent display panel and said display face of each of said plurality of video display panels are generally horizontal and form a plurality of sequential step surfaces.

The convertible display in accordance with claim 13 wherein said support structure comprises a generally planar panel having a front face and a rear face and wherein said plurality of video display panels are located at said front face and pivot between said first and second positions relative to said front face.

The convertible display in accordance with claim 14 wherein said generally planar panel is mounted to a single robotic mount, said robotic mount movable in 6 degrees of freedom, whereby said generally planar panel is movable by said single robotic mount and said plurality of video display panels are pivotable relative to said generally planar panel.

16. The convertible display in accordance with claim 14 further wherein each of said video display panels is mounted via a pivot arm to said support structure and said at least one drive pivots said pivot arms and the video display panels mounted thereto.

17. The convertible display in accordance with claim 14 wherein each video display panel is mounted to said support structure by first and second pivots located at said first and second ends of said generally planar panel.

18. The convertible display in accordance with claim 17 wherein said axis extends through said first and second pivots.

19. The convertible display in accordance with claim 14 wherein said generally planar panel is mounted to a head of said robotic mount.
