Abstract

Analyte filter arrays and methods for making an analyte filter array are provided. The arrays are formed using a dispersion of filter particles having selected moieties attached to the surface of the particles and a microarray having complementary moieties formed in an array on a substrate, such that each filter particle is attached to a selected region of the microarray. The moiety on the substrate may be RNA or DNA or other molecule. The substrate may be a surface of a detector array, a membrane that may be placed in registration with the detector array or a stamp used to transfer the filter array to a detector array.

Claims

1. A detection system for molecules and ions, comprising:

a substrate comprising a chemiresistive semiconductor detector array having a plurality of addressable regions;

a microarray of biomolecules on the substrate; and

a plurality of filter particles, each filter particle having a moiety attached thereto, the moiety being complementary to and bound to a biomolecule on a selected addressable region of the chemiresistive semiconductor detector array, whereby the filter particles comprise chemical function groups to remove or reduce an amount of a molecule or ion that traverses the filter particles and the molecule or ion in a filtrate is detected by the semiconductor detector array.

2. The detection system of claim 1 further comprising one or more layers of filter particles.

3. The detection system of claim 1 wherein the chemical function groups of the filter particles interact with a gas or gas mixture.

4. The detection system of claim 1 wherein the chemical function groups of the filter particles interact with a molecule or ion in solution.

5. The detection system of claim 1 wherein the chemical function groups of the filter particles interact with one or more liquids.

6. The detection system of claim 1 wherein the filter particles are derivatized microspheres.

7. The detection system of claim 6 wherein the microspheres are microparticle- or nanoparticle-impregnated microspheres.

8. The detection system of claim 1 wherein the filter particles are derivatized microparticles or nanoparticles.

9. The detection system of claim 1 further comprising a linking structure between the microarray and the filter particles.

10. The detection system of claim 1 further comprising an outermost layer.

11. The detection system of claim 1 wherein the microarray is in a 2×

2 pixel pattern.

12. The detection system of claim 1 wherein the microarray is in an N×

N pixel pattern, where N is greater than 2.

13. The detection system of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the microarray is in an N×

M pixel pattern, where M is not equal to N.

14. The detection system of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the microarray is in a non-rectangular pixel pattern.
