Abstract

A system and method for mobile social networking within a target area are provided. The method provides for mobile social networking. The method includes receiving a social networking profile, and a target area. The social networking profile has at least one user preference. The method also includes broadcasting the social networking profile to one or more members of the social network within the target area. The method further includes searching within the target area for the one or more members having a preference that is the same or similar to the at least one user preference. The method additionally includes enabling contact with the one or more members having the same or similar at least one user preference.

Claims

1. A method for mobile social networking, comprising:

receiving a social networking profile at a mobile computing device, the social networking profile comprising at least one user preference, wherein the user preference comprises at least one of;

personal information, professional information, search criteria, and security information;

receiving, at the mobile computing device, a target area, the target area being determined using at least the current location of a user of the mobile computing device, a previous location of the user, and a predicted location of the user, the current location, the previous location and the predicted location being determined using GPS technology, wherein the previous location is further determined by tracking a location of the mobile computing device based on a device locator associated with the mobile computing device;

broadcasting, via a communications network, the social networking profile to one or more members of the social network connected to the network within the target area;

searching, by connecting to an aggregator processor, location data and preference data of the one or more members of the social network to determine a resulting social network member within the target area having a preference that is the same or similar to the at least one user preference based on a personal and/or professional interest;

determining, via the aggregator processor, a current location of the resulting social network member by receiving the current location of the resulting social network member from the social networking profile of the resulting social network member, wherein the aggregator processor is separate from the social network, and wherein the current location of the resulting social network member in the social networking profile is updated by at least one of the GPS technology and Internet-based technology;

evaluating, via the aggregator processor, user defined security criteria, wherein the user defined security criteria determines whether the resulting social networking member is permitted to be notified, whether the resulting social networking member is permitted to contact the user, and the method of contact;

automatically transmitting, upon determination that the resulting social networking member is permitted to be notified, via the aggregator processor, a notification to the resulting social network member within the target area based on an action performed by the permitted resulting social network member indicative of the personal and/or professional interest;

enabling, upon determination that the resulting social networking member is permitted to contact the user, on the mobile computing device, contact with the resulting social network member within the target area having the same or similar at least one user preference by receiving a notification of the resulting social network member and a permitted method of contact and allowing transmission of a message to the resulting social network member over the communications network using the permitted method of contact; and

updating the target area based on a change in the previous location of the user.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the current location of the user is determined using the latitude and longitude coordinates of the user.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that the resulting social network member is within the target area comprises comparing the location of the one or more members relative to the users current location.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a communication from the aggregator via the communications network that one or more members that have the same or similar at least one user interest are within the target area.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the communicating comprises an alert, a text message, an email, or a telephone call.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

locating, using location data from the aggregator processor, the one or more members having the same or similar at least one user preference.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the location data comprises latitude and longitude coordinates.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the mobile computing device uses the location data to display the one or more members on an electronic map.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the target area is defined using a numerical distance, a specific location or destination.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one user preference comprises personal information, professional information, search criteria, and security information.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the social networking profile comprises the current location of the user.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the enabling contact further comprises sending an alert, a text message, an email, or a telephone call to the resulting social network member.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the communications network is a global positioning systems, a telecommunications network, or the Internet.

21. The method of claim 12, wherein the alert, text message, email, or a telephone call includes the user social network profile and a mode of contacting the user.

23. The method of claim 8, wherein the electronic map further comprises at least one of:

a guide and directions to the resulting social network member.

14. A system for mobile social networking comprising a mobile device, the mobile device comprising:

a processor operable to run an executable application, the executable application configured to receive a social networking profile, and a target area, the target area being determined using at least the current location of a user of the mobile device, a previous location of the user, and a predicted location of the user, the current location of the user, the previous location and the predicted location being determined using GPS technology, wherein the previous location is further determined by tracking a location of the mobile computing device based on a device locator associated with the mobile computing device;

a memory configured to store the social networking profile and the target area, wherein the memory is in communication with the processor;

a broadcast interface in communication with the processor configured to broadcast the social networking profile via a communications network to one or more members of a social network connected to the network within the target area, wherein the social networking profile comprises at least one user preference, wherein the at least one user preference comprises at least one of;

personal information, professional information, search criteria, and security information; and

a search processor configured to connect to an aggregator processor to search location data and preference data if the one or more members of the social network to determine a resulting social network member within the target area having a preference that is the same or similar to the at least one user preference based on a personal and/or professional interest;

wherein the aggregator processor;

determines a current location of the resulting social network member by receiving the current location of the resulting social network member from the social networking profile of the resulting social network member, wherein the aggregator processor is separate from the social network, and wherein the current location of the resulting social network member in the social networking profile is updated by at least one of the GPS technology and Internet-based technology;

evaluates user defined security criteria to determine whether the resulting social networking member is permitted to be notified, whether the resulting social networking member is permitted to contact the user; and

the method of contact;

automatically transmits, upon determining that the resulting social networking member is permitted to be notified, a notification to the resulting social network member within the target area based on an action performed by the permitted resulting social network member indicative of the personal and/or professional interest; and

enables, upon determining that the resulting social networking member is permitted to contact the user, on the mobile computing device, contact with the resulting social network member within the target area having the same or similar at least one user preference by receiving a notification of the resulting social network member and a permitted method of contact and allowing transmission of a message to the resulting social network member over the communications network using the permitted method of contact; and

wherein the search processor updates the target area based on a change in the previous location of the user.

15. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

a communication interface configured to enable contact with the resulting social network member within the target area having the same or similar at least one user preference by receiving a notification of the resulting social network member and a method of contact and allowing transmission of a message to the resulting social network member over the communications network using the method of contact.

16. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

a location processor configured to locate the one or more members having the same or similar at least one user preference using the location data.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein determining that the resulting social network member is within the target area comprises comparing the location of the one or more members relative to the users current location.

18. The system of claim 14, wherein the communication interface is further configured to generate a notification on the mobile computing device that the one or more members having the same or similar at least one user preference is within the target area.

22. The system of claim 14, wherein the current location of the user is determined using the latitude and longitude coordinates of the user.

19. A computer implemented method for mobile social networking, comprising the acts of:

receiving a social networking profile at a mobile computing device, and a target area, the social networking profile comprising at least one user preference, the target area being determined using at least the current location of the mobile computing device, a previous location of the mobile computing device, and a predicted location of the mobile computing device, the current location of the mobile computing device, the previous location, and the predicted location being determined by using GPS technology, wherein the previous location is further determined by tracking a location of the mobile computing device based on a device locator associated with the mobile computing device, and wherein the user preference comprises at least one of;

personal information, professional information, search criteria, and security information;

broadcasting, via a communications network, the social networking profile to one or more members of the social network connected to the communications network within the target area;

searching, by connecting to an aggregator processor, location data and preference data of the one or more members of the social network to determine a resulting social network member within the target area having a preference that is the same or similar to the at least one user preference based on a personal and/or professional interest;

determining, via the aggregator processor, a current location of the resulting social network member by receiving the current location of the resulting social network member from the social networking profile of the resulting social network member, wherein the aggregator processor is separate from the social network, and wherein the current location of the resulting social network member in the social networking profile is updated by at least one of the GPS technology and Internet-based technology;

evaluating, via the aggregator processor, user defined security criteria, wherein the user defined security criteria determines whether the resulting social networking member is permitted to be notified, whether the resulting social networking member is permitted to contact the user, and the method of contact; and

updating the target area based on a change in the previous location of the user.

20. A method for mobile social networking, comprising:

receiving a social networking profile at a mobile computing device, the social networking profile comprising at least one user preference and a target area, wherein the user preference comprises at least one of;

personal information, professional information, search criteria, and security information;

storing the social networking profile in memory associated with the mobile computing device;

associating, using a processor and GPS technology, a mobile device locator with the social networking profile, the mobile device locator being used to determine the current location of the mobile device, wherein the target area is determined using at least the current location of the mobile device, a previous location of the mobile device, and a predicted location of the mobile device, the current location of the mobile device, the previous location and the predicted location of the mobile device being determined by using the GPS technology, wherein the previous location is further determined by tracking the location of the mobile computing device based on the device locator;

receiving the mobile device locator at an aggregator from the GPS technology;

retrieving, using the aggregator, the social networking profile from the memory;

comparing, using the aggregator, the social networking profile of a user to a social networking profile of the one or more members of the social network within the target area to determine a resulting social network member with a preference that is the same or similar to the at least one user preference based on a personal and/or professional interest;

determining, via the aggregator, a current location of the resulting social network member by receiving the current location of the resulting social network member from the social networking profile of the resulting social network member, wherein the aggregator is separate from the social network, and wherein the current location of the resulting social network member in the social networking profile is updated by at least one of the GPS technology and Internet-based technology;

evaluating, via the aggregator, user defined security criteria, wherein the user defined security criteria determines whether the resulting social networking member is permitted to be notified, whether the resulting social networking member is permitted to contact the user, and the method of contact; and

updating the target area stored in the memory based on a change in the previous location of the user.
