1. A method for managing one or more transmission routes for a remote unit in a communication network, the remote unit maintaining a list of hop destinations, the method comprising:
- receiving, at the remote unit, a poll request from a base unit, wherein the base unit or an associated base collector having a first transmission range allowing the base unit or the associated base collector to transmit directly to the remote unit without routing communications through other remote units, and wherein the remote unit having a second transmission range that does not permit the remote unit to transmit to the base unit unless the transmission is through one or more hop destinations, and wherein the first transmission range is greater than the second transmission range;
in response to receiving the poll request, transmitting, by the remote unit, a poll message to a first hop destination;
listening, by the remote unit, for a transmission of the poll message from the first hop destination to determine whether the first hop destination transmitted the poll message;
receiving, at the remote unit and directly from the base unit, an acknowledgement message acknowledging that the polling message transmitted from the first hop destination was received at the base unit; and
,updating, by the remote unit, the list of hop destinations based on whether the first hop destination transmitted the poll message and based on the acknowledgment message.

19. A method of managing transmission routes in a communication network, the communication network comprising a base unit and a plurality of remote units:

transmitting, from the base unit, a first poll request to a first remote unit, the first remote unit being one of the plurality of remote units, wherein the base unit or an associated base collector having a first transmission range allowing the base unit or the associated base collector to transmit directly to the first remote unit without routing communications through other remote units, and wherein the first remote unit having a second transmission range that does not permit the remote unit to transmit to the base unit unless the transmission is through one or more hop destinations, and wherein the first transmission range is greater than the second transmission range; listening for a polling response from the first remote unit in response to the first poll request; and updating a network topology data stored in a memory associated with the base unit based on the polling response, wherein the network topology data comprises identities of one or more remote units in the communication network and geolocations of one or more remote units in the communication network. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26)
