Stomach peristalsis device and method
First Claim
1. An implantable prosthetic valve for moving ingested material through a portion of the digestive tract, the prosthetic valve comprising:
- an outer support structure;
at least one expandable member located within the outer support structure, the at least one expandable member configured to expand or contract to move material through the portion of the digestive tract; and
an inner member for movement of the ingested material through the inner member, the inner member located within the outer support structure;
wherein the at least one expandable member is positioned within the outer support structure such that expansion and contraction of the at least one expandable member moves ingested material through the inner member;
wherein the at least one expandable member includes an interface for the flow of an inflation medium in and out of the at least one expandable member, the interface configured to be coupled to a pump structure to pump an inflation medium in and out of the at least one expandable member; and
a pressure transducer positioned to detect a level of pressure in an expandable member caused by an amount of inflation medium within the expandable member.

Abstract
The invention relates to an implantable stomach prosthesis for surgically replacing or augmenting all or part of the antrum and/or pylorus of a stomach. The prosthesis controls the passage of food from the stomach to the small intestine. The prosthesis may be configured to churn ingested material and release it from the stomach through a prosthetic pyloric valve. At least one expandable member is arranged to be expanded to control the passage of food and/or to mimic the churning action of a patient'"'"'s stomach. The prosthesis includes an outer support structure, a flexible inner member forming a conduit for the movement of material, and at least one expandable member located between the outer support structure and inner member. An implantable pump system is provided for inflating and deflating the expandable member(s).
