1. An electronic device comprising:
- near field communication circuitry configured to be switchable, in response to a control signal, between a first mode in which the near field communication circuitry transmits a polling signal to detect a second electronic device and a second mode in which the near field communication circuitry listens for a polling signal from the second electronic device or another electronic device;
motion sensor circuitry configured to output a motion signal descriptive of a motion of the electronic device; and
processing circuitry configured to;
receive the motion signal to detect a first predefined motion pattern, andtransmit the control signal, to the near field communication circuitry, to switch the near field communication circuitry from the second mode to the first mode upon detection of the first predefined motion pattern in the motion signal.

Abstract
A portable electronic device (110) with a NFC (near field communication) unit (114) is switchable between an active mode and a passive mode. A motion sensor unit (112) records a motion of the portable electronic device (110), and outputs a motion signal descriptive for the recorded motion. A processing unit (111) analysis the motion signal to detect a first predefined motion pattern including an acceleration and a deceleration phase. The NFC unit (114) is switched into the active mode upon detection of a first predefined motion pattern descriptive for an NFC touch gesture.
