1. An aircraft hazard warning system, comprising:
- an electronic processing system configured to determine an icing condition at least in part in response to radar reflectivity data sensed onboard an aircraft, the electronic processing system being configured to cause an electronic display to provide an indication of the icing condition, wherein the electronic processing system is configured to determine a presence of a stratiform rain region and determine a number of old convective core cells in the stratiform rain region, wherein the presence of the stratiform rain region and the number of old convective core cells in the stratiform rain region is used to determine a presence of the icing condition.

Abstract
A hazard warning or weather radar system or method can be utilized to determine a location of ice. The system and method can be used in an aircraft. The aircraft weather radar system can include a radar antenna and an electronic processor. The radar antenna receives radar returns. The processor determines levels of icing conditions and causes the levels to be displayed on an electronic display.

15. A method of displaying an indication of an icing condition on an aircraft display in an avionics system, the method comprising:
-
receiving radar reflectivity data and temperature data and determining a presence of a stratiform rain region; determining whether the stratiform rain region included old convective cells within a time period; and providing the indication of the icing condition in response to a presence of the old convective cells in the stratiform rain region. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19)

20. An aircraft weather radar system, comprising:
-
a radar antenna for receiving radar returns; and a processor configured to identify an icing condition and cause an electronic display to display a region of the icing condition, wherein the processor is configured to determine a size of a stratiform rain region and determine a number of old embedded convective core cells in the stratiform rain region within a time period, wherein the icing condition is detected in response to the number of the old embedded convective core cells in the stratiform rain region.
