Abstract

A system and method is disclosed for presenting relevant advertising to web pages, including web logs. The ads can be selected by reference to an underlying content presented in web logs, based on extracting topics from the pages, and using these topics as the basis for a search query. Ads can then be matched against another set of topics derived from web pages forming the search results to the query.

Claims

1. A method of using a computing system to present advertising information within a web log (blog) page comprising:

compiling blog content extracted from the blog page with the computing system to identify a first set of blog page topics;

generating a set of search results with a search engine from a webpage term index based on a query automatically constructed by the computing system from said first set of blog page topics;

wherein said search results include references to one or more separate webpages;

processing content extracted from selected ones of said one or more separate webpages referenced in said search results with the computing system to identify one or more second topics in said set of search results;

presenting at least one first advertisement with the computing system within the blog page in response to said query based on matching content associated with said at least one first advertisement to said one or more second topics.

2. The method of claim 1 further including the steps of:

selecting a set of blogs from a plurality of blog pages based on a first criteria with the computing system; and

defining a blog collective based on said set of blogs, which blog collective represents a set of affiliated members whose collective content is aggregated to provide said blog content.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said least one first advertisement is presented by the computing system along with a second type of advertisement which is provided based on a comparison to said first set of blog page topics.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said blog content is compiled on a dynamic basis by the computing system.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said first advertisement is also presented as part of an RSS feed within the blog.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein said at least one first advertisement is presented when other advertisements derived and based on a comparison of content of said blog are not available or not cost competitive with said at least one first advertisement.

7. The method of claim 1 further including a step:

providing consideration to one at least one of an operator or owner of said separate webpages in response to a follow up action taken on said first advertisement.

8. The method of claim 1 further including a step:

evaluating suitable ads for the blog page based on an analysis of advertisements previously determined for individual ones of said webpages presented in said search results.

9. The method of claim 1 further including a step:

evaluating suitability of the blog page for one or more second content based advertisements.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein links in the blog page are also used to construct said query.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein a natural language classifier is also used to identify said first set of blog page topics from the blog page.

12. A method of using a computing system to present advertising information within a web log (blog) page comprising:

compiling blog content extracted from the blog page with the computing system to derive a first set of individual blog topics related to said blog content;

generating a set of search results with a search engine from a webpage term index based on a query automatically constructed by the computing system using said first set of blog page topics as content search terms;

wherein said search results for said content search terms include references to one or more separate webpages;

processing content extracted from a selected aggregate group of ones of said one or more separate webpages referenced in said search results with the computing system to identify one or more second matching topics in said set of search results;

presenting at least one first advertisement with the computing system within a web page of the blog page based on comparing said one or more second matching topics to content for said at least one first advertisement;

presenting at least one second advertisement with the computing system within a web page of the blog page based on comparing said one or more first set of blog page topics to content for said at least one second advertisement.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein links in the blog page are also used to construct said query.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein a natural language classifier is also used to identify said first set of blog page topics from the blog page.

15. A system for presenting advertising information within a web log (Blog) page comprising:

a computing machine system adapted to execute a plurality of machine executable routines including;

a first machine executable routine configured to compile blog content extracted from the blog page and identify a first set of blog page topics;

a second machine executable routine configured to generate a set of search results with a search engine from a webpage term index based on a query automatically constructed by the computing machine system from said first set of blog page topics;

wherein said search results include references to one or more separate webpages;

a third machine executable routine configured to process search content extracted from a selected aggregated group of content of ones of said one or more separate webpages referenced in said search results to identify one or more second topics in said set of search results;

a fourth machine executable routine configured to present at least one first advertisement within the blog page based on matching content associated with said at least one first advertisement to said one or more second topics.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein links in the blog page are also used to construct said query.

17. The system of claim 15 wherein a natural language classifier is also used to identify said first set of blog page topics from the blog page.

18. The system of claim 15, further including a routine for presenting said least one first advertisement along with a second type of advertisement based on a comparison to said first set of blog page topics content of said blog.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein said at least one first advertisement is presented when other advertisements derived and based on a comparison of content of said blog are not available or not cost competitive with said at least one first advertisement.

20. The system of claim 15 further including a routine for evaluating suitable ads for the blog page based on an analysis of said search results.

21. The system of claim 15 further including a routine for evaluating suitability of the blog page for one or more second content based advertisements.

22. A method of using a computing system to present advertising information within a web log (blog) page comprising:

compiling blog content extracted from the blog page with the computing system to identify a first set of blog page topics;

generating a set of search results with a search engine from a webpage term index based on a query automatically constructed by the computing system from said first set of blog page topics;

wherein said search results include references to one or more separate webpages;

processing said one or more separate webpages referenced in said search results to generate a synthetic web page comprised of selected content compiled as aggregated content from all of said one or more separate webpages;

processing content extracted from said synthetic web page with the computing system referenced in said search results to identify one or more second topics in said set of search results;

presenting at least one first advertisement with the computing system within the blog page based on matching content associated with said at least one first advertisement to said one or more second topics derived from said synthetic web page.

23. The method of claim 22 further including a step:

precomputing and storing one or more synthetic webpages in an index.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein said synthetic webpages are determined by analyzing search logs and compiling a top N list of pages retrieved in response to a query for a topic.

25. The method of claim 23 wherein said synthetic webpages are determined by compiling content from a membership collective of websites for a topic bound by a common contractual arrangement.

26. The method of claim 22 wherein a natural language classifier is also used to identify said first set of blog page topics from the blog page.

27. A system for presenting advertising information within a web log (Blog) page comprising:

a computing machine system adapted to execute a plurality of machine executable routines including;

a first machine executable routine configured to compile blog content extracted from the blog page and identify a first set of blog page topics;

a second machine executable routine configured to generate a set of search results with a search engine from a webpage term index based on a query automatically constructed by the computing machine system from said first set of blog page topics;

wherein said search results include references to one or more separate webpages;

a third machine executable routine configured to process search content extracted from a synthetic web page comprising aggregated content taken from selected ones of said one or more separate webpages referenced in said search results to identify one or more second topics in said set of search results;

a fourth machine executable routine configured to present at least one first advertisement within the blog page based on matching content associated with said at least one first advertisement to said one or more second topics.

28. The method of claim 27 further including a step:

precomputing and storing one or more synthetic webpages in an index.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein said synthetic webpages are determined by analyzing search logs and compiling a top N list of pages retrieved in response to a query for a topic.

30. The method of claim 28 wherein said synthetic webpages are determined by compiling content from a membership collective of websites for a topic bound by a common contractual arrangement.

31. The method of claim 28 wherein a natural language classifier is also used to identify said first set of blog page topics from the blog page.
