Abstract

A power tool assembly includes a drop arm assembly movable along a drop path between a first drop arm assembly position whereat a portion of a shaping device supported by the drop arm assembly extends above a workpiece support surface and a second drop arm assembly position whereat the portion of the shaping device does not extend above the workpiece support surface, an actuator housing configured to house a first actuating device at an active location at which a force from the first actuating device is transferred to the drop arm assembly, the actuator housing including a slit configured to position a second actuating device at an inactive location, and a control system configured such that when the first actuating device is housed, the control system controls the first actuating device to transfer the force to the drop arm assembly when an unsafe condition is sensed.

Claims

1. A power tool assembly comprising:

a drop arm assembly movable along a drop path between a first drop arm assembly position whereat a portion of a shaping device supported by the drop arm assembly extends above a workpiece support surface and a second drop arm assembly position whereat the portion of the shaping device does not extend above the workpiece support surface;

an actuator housing configured to house a first actuating device at an active location at which a force from the first actuating device is transferred to the drop arm assembly when the drop arm assembly is at the first drop arm assembly position, the actuator housing including a slit configured to position a second actuating device at an inactive location; and

a control system configured such that when the first actuating device is housed, the control system controls the first actuating device to transfer the force to the drop arm assembly when an unsafe condition is sensed.

2. The power tool assembly of claim 1, wherein the housing is configured such that the force is transferred substantially within a plane defined by the drop path.

3. The power tool assembly of claim 2, wherein:

the drop arm assembly is configured to support the shaping device outwardly of a first side of the plane; and

the actuator housing is configured to position the second actuating device at an inactive location outwardly of a second side of the plane, the second side opposite the first side.

4. The power tool assembly of claim 3, further comprising:

a height adjust carriage orbitally supporting the drop arm assembly, wherein the actuator housing is mounted to the height adjust carriage.

5. The power tool assembly of claim 4, the actuator housing further comprising:

a mounting plate configured to mount to the height adjust carriage; and

a finger plate, the finger plate including at least one finger configured to abut, but not attach to, at least one rib on the height adjust carriage.

6. The power tool assembly of claim 5, wherein the slit extends from a first end portion of the actuator housing toward a second end portion of the actuator housing, the slit terminating in a rounded portion having a diameter greater than a minimum diameter of the slit at the first end portion.

7. The power tool assembly of claim 6, further comprising:

a reaction plug configured to threadedly engage the first end portion of the actuator housing.

8. The power tool assembly of claim 1, further comprising:

a cartridge housing the first actuating device and the second actuating device, the cartridge including a bridge extending between the first actuating device and the second actuating device and sized to be received within the slit.

9. The power tool assembly of claim 8, wherein the housing is configured such that the force is transferred substantially within a plane defined by the drop path.

10. The power tool assembly of claim 9, wherein:

the drop arm assembly is configured to support the shaping device outwardly of a first side of the plane; and

the actuator housing is configured to position the second actuating device at an inactive location outwardly of a second side of the plane, the second side opposite the first side.

11. The power tool assembly of claim 10, further comprising:

a height adjust carriage orbitally supporting the drop arm assembly, wherein the actuator housing is mounted to the height adjust carriage.

12. The power tool assembly of claim 11, the actuator housing further comprising:

a mounting plate configured to mount to the height adjust carriage; and

a finger plate, the finger plate including at least one finger configured to abut, but not attach to, at least one rib on the height adjust carriage.

13. The power tool assembly of claim 12, wherein the slit extends from a first end portion of the actuator housing toward a second end portion of the actuator housing, the slit terminating in a rounded portion having a diameter greater than a minimum diameter of the slit at the first end portion.

14. The power tool assembly of claim 13, further comprising:

a reaction plug configured to threadedly engage the first end portion of the actuator housing.

A method of positioning an actuator in a power tool assembly including a drop arm assembly movable along a drop path between a first drop arm assembly position whereat a portion of a shaping device supported by the drop arm assembly extends above a workpiece support surface and a second drop arm assembly position whereat the portion of the shaping device does not extend above the workpiece support surface, comprising:

positioning an end portion of a first actuator within an actuator housing configured to house the first actuating device at an active location at which a force from the first actuating device is transferred to the drop arm assembly when the drop arm assembly is at the first drop arm assembly position;

inserting a bridge of a cartridge housing the first actuating device and a second actuating device into a slit extending from a first end portion of the actuator housing toward a second end portion of the actuator housing after positioning the end portion of the firs actuator within the actuator housing, the bridge extending between the first actuating device and the second actuating device; and

seating the first actuator within the actuator housing.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein seating the first actuator within the actuator housing comprises:

seating the first actuator at a location whereat the force is transferred substantially within a plane defined by the drop path.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the drop arm assembly is configured to support the shaping device outwardly of a first side of the plane, the method further comprising:

positioning the second actuating device at an inactive location outwardly of a second side of the plane, the second side opposite the first side.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein inserting the bridge of the cartridge housing comprises:

moving the bridge from a portion of the slit in the first end portion of the actuator housing toward a rounded portion of the slit, the rounded portion having a diameter greater than a minimum diameter of the slit at the first end portion.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein seating the first actuator comprises:

threadedly engaging the first end portion of the actuator housing with a reaction plug.
