Abstract

A heterogeneous network which supports multiple communication technologies (e.g., communication in accordance with multiple air interface standards) in a unified architecture can provide near-term solutions to capacity problems. Specifically, in one embodiment, a heterogeneous network that includes both macro-base cells and pico cells and that incorporates longer range wireless air interfaces (e.g., second, third, or fourth, generation wireless air interface standards) and shorter range wireless air interfaces (e.g., Wi-Fi) can be provided. Such a heterogeneous network can include the coordination of security, quality of service, assessment of mobility of user equipment, authentication, provisioning systems, and location information.

Claims

1. User Equipment (UE) comprising:

transceiver circuitry configurable to communicate in accordance with a shorter-range air interface standard and configurable to communicate in accordance with a longer-range air interface standard; and

processing circuitry configured to determine a location of the UE from either first or second location processing information received from the transceiver circuitry,

wherein the processing circuitry is configured to;

determine the location from the first location processing information during a time in which the UE has a communication session established in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard, and

determine the location from the second location processing information during a time in which the UE has a communication session established in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard,

wherein the first location processing information is received via the longer-range air interface standard, and the second location processing information is received via the shorter-range air interface standard.

The UE of claim 1 wherein the UE is configured to operate within a heterogeneous network comprising one or more macro cells and a plurality of micro cells, the one or more macro cells configured for communication in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard, least some micro cells of the plurality are configured for communication in accordance with multiple air interface standards including the longer-range air interface standard and the shorter-range air interface standard,

wherein the transceiver circuitry is configurable to:

communicate with one or more of the micro cells in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard, and

communicate with one or more of the macro cells and one or more of the micro cells in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard.

The UE of claim 2 wherein the processing circuitry is configured to determine the location from the first location processing information received by the transceiver circuitry from a first micro cell in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard when the UE is communicating with a second micro cell in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard.

The UE of claim 2 wherein the processing circuitry is configured to determine the location from the second location processing information received by the transceiver circuitry from a first micro cell in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard when the UE is communicating with a second micro cell in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard.

5. The UE of claim 2 wherein the location of the UE is an absolute geographic location,

wherein when the UE has a first communication channel established with a first micro cell in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard, the UE is configured to instantiate a second communication channel with a second micro cell in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard to exchange location information without implementing a handover,

wherein the UE is configured to obtain the second location processing information from the second micro cell to determine the absolute geographic location.

6. The UE of claim 5 wherein the UE is further configured to engage in a location-based service (LBS) based on the location of the UE using the first communication channel established with the first micro cell.

7. The UE of claim 5 wherein the second communication channel is established on a periodic or as needed basis for location determination.

8. The UE of claim 6 wherein establishment of the second communication channel is triggered by a location-based service (LBS) request from an applications processor of the UE.

The UE of claim 2 wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to receive handover instructions from a macro cell and perform a horizontal handover from the macro cell to a micro cell to handover communications with the macro cell from with the longer-range air interface standard to communications with the micro cell in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard, and

wherein when communicating within a micro cell in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard, the processing circuitry is further configured to perform an intra-micro ccli vertical handover to handover communications within the micro cell from the longer-range air interface standard to the shorter-range air interface standard.

10. The UE of claim 9 wherein the processing circuitry is configured to utilize a mobile internet protocol (MIP) for the vertical handover.

11. The UE of claim 10 wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

utilize a home-network IP address for communicating within a home network;

utilize a temporary network IP address for communicating within a non-home network, the temporary network IP address identifying a current network location of the UE on the non-home network,

wherein the home-network IP address is associated with a local endpoint of a MIP tunnel to a home agent provided by the home network, and

wherein use of the MIP tunnel allows the vertical handover to occur without a break in the communication channel for handover of communications within the micro cell from the longer-range air interface standard to the shorter-range air interface standard.

12. The UE of claim 10 wherein the vertical handover is a handover of a data session from the longer-range air interface standard to the shorter-range air interface standard to offload traffic.

13. The UE of claim 2 wherein the transceiver circuitry is configurable to communicate over one or more 20 MHz bandwidth channels including 40 MHz bandwidth channels in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard, and

wherein the transceiver circuitry configurable to communicate at least one of a time-division duplex (TDD) mode and a frequency-division duplex (FDD) mode in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard.

14. The UE of claim 13 wherein the shorter-range air interface standard is an IEEE 802.11 air interface standard and the longer-range air interface standard is a 3GPP LTE air interface standard.

The UE of claim 1 wherein the shorter-range air interface standard corresponds to an air interface standard associated with a relatively small geographic range and the longer-range air interface standard corresponds to an air interface standard associated with a relatively large geographic range.

A method performed by User Equipment (UE) for operation within a heterogeneous network comprising one or more macro cells and a plurality of micro cells, the one or more macro cells configured for communication in accordance with a longer-range air interface standard, at least some of the plurality of micro cells configured for communication in accordance with multiple air interface standards including the longer-range air interface standard and a shorter-range air interface standard, the method comprising:

configuring transceiver circuitry to communicate with one or more of the micro cells in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard and to communicate with one or more of the macro cells and one or more of the micro cells in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard; and

determining a location of the UE from either first or second location processing information received from one of the micro cells, and

wherein the location is determined from the first location processing information during a time in which the UE has a communication session established in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard, and

wherein the location is determined from the second location processing information during a time in which the UE has a communication session established in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard,

wherein the first location processing information is received via the longer-range air interface standard and the second location processing information is received via the shorter-range air interface standard.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the location of the UE is an absolute geographic location,

wherein when the UE has a first communication channel established with a first micro cell in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard, the UE is configured to instantiate a second communication channel with a second micro cell in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard to exchange location information without implementing a handover,

wherein the UE is configured to obtain the second location processing information from the second micro cell to determine the absolute geographic location, and

wherein the UE is configured to engage in a location based service based on the absolute geographic location using the first communication channel established with the first micro cell.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the second communication channel is established on a periodic or as needed basis for location determination.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein establishment of the second communication channel is triggered by a location-based service (LBS) request from an applications processor of the UE.

The method of claim 16 further comprising receiving handover instructions from a macro cell and perform a horizontal handover from the macro cell to a micro cell to handover communications with the macro cell from with the longer-range air interface standard to communications with the micro cell in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard, and

wherein when communicating within a micro cell in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard, the method includes performing an intra-micro cell vertical handover to handover communications within the micro cell from the longer-range air interface standard to the shorter-range air interface standard.

21. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium that stores instructions for execution by one or more processors of User Equipment (UE) to configure the UE to perform operations to:

communicate with micro cells in accordance with a shorter-range air interface standard;

communicate with macro cells and micro cells in accordance with an longer-range air interface standard; and

determine a location of the UE from either first or second location processing information received from one of the micro cells, and

wherein the location is determined from the first location processing information during a time in which the UE has a communication session established in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard, and

wherein the location is determined from the second location processing information during a time in which the UE has a communication session established in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard,

wherein the first location processing information is received via the longer-range air interface standard, and the second location processing information is received via the shorter-range air interface standard.

22. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 21 wherein the location of the UE is an absolute geographic location,

wherein when the UE has a first communication channel established with a first micro cell in accordance with the longer-range air interface standard, the UE is configured to instantiate a second communication channel with a second micro cell in accordance with the shorter-range air interface standard to exchange location information without implementing a handover,

wherein the UE is configured to obtain the second location processing information from the second micro cell to determine the absolute geographic location, and

wherein the UE is configured to engage in a location based service based on the absolute geographic location using the first communication channel established with the first micro cell.
