First Claim
1. A miniature vein enhancer, for use in performing a venipuncture procedure, said miniature vein enhancer comprising:
- a single laser for emitting a beam consisting of visible light at a selective wavelength permitting differential absorption, a housing, a movable mirror, a mirror drive system, and means for adjusting an intensity of said beam of laser light from said single laser;
said single laser mounted in said housing for said movable mirror to receive said beam of laser light, for said mirror drive system to selectively cause movement of said movable mirror for transmitting said beam of laser light in a pattern onto a three-dimensional body target area, with said means for adjusting said intensity alternating between at least a first intensity level and a second intensity level for producing said pattern on the three-dimensional body target area as a series of spots, thereby creating said pattern of said spots of light directly on the three-dimensional body target area for said selective wavelength to form a three-dimensional contrast, said three-dimensional contrast comprising one or more dark areas identifying locations of one or more blood vessels within the three-dimensional body target area, with one or more lighter areas identifying the tissue surrounding the one or more blood vessels, said three-dimensional contrast permitting accurate performance of a venipuncture procedure.

Abstract
The present invention is a Miniature Vein Enhancer that includes a Miniature Projection Head. The Miniature Projection Head may be operated in one of three modes, AFM, DBM, and RTM. The Miniature Projection Head of the present invention projects an image of the veins of a patient, which aids the practitioner in pinpointing a vein for an intravenous drip, blood test and the like. The Miniature projection head may have a cavity for a power source or it may have a power source located in a body portion of the Miniature Vein Enhancer. The Miniature Vein Enhancer may be attached to one of several improved needle protectors, or the Miniature Vein Enhancer may be attached to a body similar to a flashlight for hand held use. The Miniature Vein Enhancer of the present invention may also be attached to a magnifying glass, a flat panel display, and the like.

1. A miniature vein enhancer, for use in performing a venipuncture procedure, said miniature vein enhancer comprising:
- a single laser for emitting a beam consisting of visible light at a selective wavelength permitting differential absorption, a housing, a movable mirror, a mirror drive system, and means for adjusting an intensity of said beam of laser light from said single laser;

- a single laser for emitting a beam consisting of visible light at a selective wavelength permitting differential absorption, a housing, a movable mirror, a mirror drive system, and a microprocessor configured to control and adjust an intensity of said beam of laser light emitted by said single laser;
said single laser mounted in said housing for said movable mirror to receive said beam of laser light, and for said mirror drive system to selectively cause movement of said movable mirror to transmit said beam of laser light in a pattern and onto a three-dimensional body target area, with said microprocessor configured to adjust said intensity to alternate between at least a first intensity level and a second intensity level to produce said pattern on the three-dimensional body target area as a series of spots, to create a pattern of said spots of light at said selective wavelength directly on the three-dimensional body target area to form a three-dimensional contrast, said three-dimensional contrast comprising one or more dark areas that identify locations of one or more blood vessels within the three-dimensional body target area, and one or more lighter areas that identify tissue surrounding the one or more blood vessels, said three-dimensional contrast permitting accurate performance of a venipuncture procedure. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15)

16. A miniature vein enhancer comprising:
- a single laser that emits a beam of light at a selective wavelength permitting differential absorption by blood and surrounding tissue;
a scanner that receives said beam of laser light, and transmits said beam of laser light in a selected pattern directly onto a three-dimensional body target area and thereby forms a contrast between one or more subcutaneous blood vessels and the surrounding tissue of the three-dimensional body target area, said three-dimensional contrast being formed directly on the three-dimensional body target area, said contrast comprising one or more blood vessels absorbing more of said selective wavelength of laser light to create one or more dark areas identifying locations of the one or more blood vessels, and more light being reflected by the tissue surrounding the one or more blood vessels to create light areas;
a photo detector being responsive to said laser light, said photo detector receiving a representation of said contrast formed by said reflected laser light; and
wherein said photo detector outputs said representation into a detection circuit, said detection circuit being adapted to provide a control output to a power supply for said single laser; and
wherein when said detection circuit detects changes in the amplitude of light in said visual contrast corresponding to a blood vessel being detected, power is increased to said single laser to thereby increase an intensity of said emitted laser light to improve visibility of said one or more veins; and
wherein when said detection circuit detects no changes in said amplitude corresponding to no blood vessel being detected, power is decreased to thereby decrease an intensity of said emitted laser light to be dimly visible but be sufficient for further detection. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20, 21)

22. A miniature vein enhancing system comprising:
- a single laser for emitting a beam of light at a selective wavelength permitting differential absorption, a scanner that receives said beam of laser light, said scanner comprising one or more moving mirrors that selectively transmit said beam of laser light in a pattern and onto a three-dimensional body target area, thereby creating a pattern of light directly on the three-dimensional body target area, wherein said selective wavelength forms a three-dimensional contrast directly on the three-dimensional body target area, said three-dimensional contrast comprising one or more dark areas identifying locations of one or more blood vessels within the three-dimensional body target area with lighter areas identifying the tissue surrounding the one or more blood vessels;
a photo detector, said photo detector receiving light reflected from the three-dimensional body target area;
one or more discrete electronic components or a microprocessor, the output of said photo detector being fed into said discrete electronic components or microprocessor to determine changes in the amplitude of light reflected from the three-dimensional body target area to detect a relative amount of blood indicating a blood vessel, said discrete electronic components or microprocessor being adapted to provide a control output to a power supply to increase power to said single laser to increase the intensity of said beam of light when a blood vessel is detected. - View Dependent Claims (23, 24, 25)

A miniature vein enhancer comprising a single laser for emitting a beam of light at a selective wavelength permitting differential absorption, a scanner that receives said beam of laser light, said scanner comprising one or more moving mirrors that selectively transmit said beam of laser light in a pattern onto a three-dimensional body target area, thereby creating a pattern of light directly on the three-dimensional body target area, wherein said selective wavelength forms a three-dimensional contrast being visible to the unaided human eye and being perceived directly on the three-dimensional body target area, said three-dimensional contrast comprising one or more dark areas identifying locations of one or more veins within the three-dimensional body target area with lighter areas identifying the tissue surrounding the one or more veins;
- a photo detector, said photo detector receiving light reflected off of the three-dimensional body target area, the output of said photo detector being fed into a detection circuit to determine changes in the amplitude of light reflected from the three-dimensional body target area to detect a relative amount of blood, said detection circuit being adapted to provide a control output to a power supply, said power supply supplying power to said single laser; and
wherein when a vein is detected by said detection circuit, said control output from said detection circuit causes power to said single laser from said power supply to be increased, thereby increasing the intensity of said beam of laser light.

wherein when a vein is detected by said detection means, said control output from said detection means causes power to said single laser from said power supply to be increased, thereby increasing the intensity of said beam of laser light.
