1. A method of performing an orthopedic procedure, comprising:

  • coupling a base member to a bone;

    coupling a portable surgical orientation device to at least one adjustment device coupled to the base member, the portable surgical orientation device comprising an inertial sensor;

    moving and/or swinging an extremity of the patient or the portable surgical orientation device, wherein the inertial sensor monitors the orientation of the portable surgical orientation device in a three-dimensional coordinate reference system upon moving and/or swinging the extremity of the patient or the portable surgical orientation device, wherein a system comprising the portable surgical orientation device determines a center of rotation of a joint and/or a mechanical axis of a bone based on data produced by the inertial sensor, and wherein the portable surgical orientation device comprises a graphical user interface is provided having an interactive window displaying on-screen graphics for a user.
