Abstract

A method to prepare a self-decontaminating surface, where that method includes disposing a first coating on a surface, where that first coating comprises an organosilane, and disposing a second coating over the first coating, where the second coating comprises TiO₂.

Claims

1. A method of preparing a self-decontaminating surface on a substrate, said method comprising:

(1) disposing onto a substrate an aqueous mixture of an organosilane of structure (5),

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said organosilane is an organosilane of structure (1),

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said aqueous mixture comprises 3.6 weight percent of said organosilane (5).

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said organosilane is an organosilane of structure (14),

5. The method of claim 1, wherein R⁸ comprises a C₁₈ alkyl chain.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein casting the liquid coating composition follows disposing the organosilane by about 15 minutes.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said substrate is Formica.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises a surface within a mass transportation vehicle.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said self-decontaminating surface comprises a linear polymer having the structure (3),

10. The method claim 1, wherein said self-decontaminating surface comprises a cross-linked polymer having the structure (4a),
