Abstract

An apparatus for humidifying a flow of pressurized, breathable air includes varying a first pressure of the flow of breathable gas to vary a level of thermal engagement between the conductive portion of the reservoir and the heater plate, varying a height of the variable portion varies a level of thermal engagement between the conductive portion of the reservoir and the heater plate, use of a humidifier reservoir base component with a maximum water capacity substantially equal to the predetermined maximum volume of water of the humidifier reservoir or the use of intersecting inlet and outlet axes.

Claims

1. An apparatus for humidifying a flow of breathable gas, comprising:

a heater plate;

a chamber structured and arranged for fluid communication with the flow of breathable gas; and

a reservoir including a cavity structured to hold a volume of liquid,

the reservoir comprising a base including a conductor plate comprising a heat conducting material, a lid pivotally coupled to the base, and a compressible member between the base and lid, the lid including an inlet configured to deliver the flow of breathable gas into the cavity and an outlet configured to deliver a humidified supply of breathable gas from the cavity,

wherein the reservoir including its base, lid, and compressible member form a unit that is removably engageable with the heater plate to arrange the conductor plate for thermal engagement with the heater plate so as to allow thermal transfer of heat from the heater plate to the volume of liquid within the cavity of the reservoir, and

wherein the compressible member is structured and arranged to allow movement of the reservoir in response to a pressure of the flow of breathable gas in the chamber, and wherein varying the pressure of the flow of breathable gas in the chamber varies a level of thermal engagement between the conductor plate and the heater plate.

2. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the thermal engagement is in a first direction that is substantially normal to a surface of the conductor plate.

3. The apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein the apparatus is configured to vary a magnitude of a force between the conductor plate and the heater plate in the first direction as the pressure is varied.

4. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the chamber is part of the reservoir.

5. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the compressible member comprises an elastomeric material structured and arranged to allow said movement of the reservoir in response to the pressure of the flow of breathable gas in the chamber.

6. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a dock configured to receive the reservoir, and the dock comprises the heater plate.

The apparatus as claimed in claim 6, wherein the dock further comprises a reservoir receiving cavity having a top portion and a bottom portion, the bottom portion having the heater plate located thereon, the reservoir receiving cavity configured to retain at least a portion of the reservoir therein.

The apparatus as claimed in claim 7, wherein the compressible member comprises an elastomeric material structured and arranged to allow said movement of the reservoir in response to the pressure of the flow of breathable gas in the chamber, and the compressible member is compressed to enable insertion of the reservoir into the reservoir receiving cavity of the dock.

9. The apparatus as claimed in claim 7, wherein the top portion of the reservoir receiving cavity is moveable between an open and closed configuration to facilitate insertion of the reservoir into the reservoir receiving cavity.

10. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the reservoir further comprises at least one handle to facilitate coupling of the reservoir to the dock.

11. The apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the reservoir further includes a retaining clip adapted to engage with a recess on the dock to retain the reservoir in the reservoir receiving cavity of the dock.

12. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the reservoir is structured to prevent refilling of the reservoir when the reservoir is coupled to the dock.

13. The apparatus according to claim 12, wherein at least a portion of the reservoir is prevented from being opened when the reservoir is coupled to the dock.

14. The apparatus according to claim 12, wherein the reservoir includes a re-filling cap.

15. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the compressible member is configured to adjust in size as the pressure is varied to vary the level of thermal engagement between the heater plate and the conductor plate.

16. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the base includes the cavity structured to hold the volume of liquid.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the compressible member comprises an elastomeric material structured and arranged to allow said movement of the reservoir in response to the pressure of the flow of breathable gas in the chamber, and the compressible member forms a seal between the base and the lid.

18. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the reservoir further includes a latch to secure the base and the lid together.

19. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the level of thermal engagement comprises a magnitude of force between the conductor plate and the heater plate.

20. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the conductor plate of the reservoir is directly engaged with the heater plate.

21. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the pressure of the flow of breathable gas in the chamber is configured to force the conductor plate against the heater plate to improve the level of thermal engagement.

22. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the reservoir and a dock comprising the heater plate are arranged to allow freedom of movement in a direction of the thermal engagement.

23. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the compressible member comprises an elastomeric material structured and arranged to allow said movement of the reservoir in response to the pressure of the flow of breathable gas in the chamber.

24. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising an overfill protection element configured to prevent filling the reservoir above a predetermined maximum volume of water.

25. The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the overfill protection element comprises at least one orifice formed in a wall of the reservoir, the at least one orifice defining an egress path of water when the predetermined maximum volume of water is exceeded.

26. The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the overfill protection element comprises a sloped profile in a side profile of a wall of the reservoir, the sloped profile defining an egress path of water when the predetermined maximum volume of water is exceeded.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the inlet includes an inlet tube and the outlet includes an outlet tube, wherein the inlet tube includes an inlet interior end and an inlet exterior end and the outlet tube includes an outlet interior end and an outlet exterior end, and wherein the inlet interior end and the outlet interior end are located within the cavity.

The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a dock including a cavity configured to receive the reservoir, the dock including a top portion configured to cover at least a portion of the reservoir and a bottom portion including the heater plate, wherein the top and bottom portions are configured to constrain at least a portion of the reservoir therebetween.
