Abstract

According to an aspect of the present disclosure, an automated external defibrillator is configured to deliver one or both of electrical pulses and shocks to a heart of a patient during a cardiac emergency. The defibrillator includes a defibrillator electrode delivery system and a hydrating system. The defibrillator electrode delivery system includes a pair of defibrillation electrode pads. Each pad supports a hydrogel to facilitate the deliverance of one or both of electrical pulses and shocks to a patient. The hydrating system includes a fluid container that maintains a fluid that hydrates the hydrogel over a predetermined time period to prolong the effectiveness of the hydrogel.

Claims

1. An automated external defibrillator configured to deliver electrical pulses and/or shocks to a heart of a patient during a cardiac emergency, the defibrillator comprising:

a housing supporting an electrical connector, a battery, and circuitry;

a pair of defibrillation electrode pads supported on the housing, each defibrillation electrode pad supporting a hydrogel and being pre-connected to the electrical connector so that each defibrillation electrode pad is in electrical communication with the battery and the circuitry;

a controller in electrical communication with the circuitry; and

a hydrating system including a fluid container and a sprayer within the housing, the fluid container maintaining a fluid, the controller being configured to control the sprayer to spray at least one of the defibrillation electrode pads with the fluid to prolong the effectiveness of the hydrogel.

2. The defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein the fluid is water.

3. The defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to control the sprayer to periodically or continuously spray the at least one of the defibrillation electrode pads with the fluid.

4. The defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein the hydrating system includes a plurality of sprayers, each sprayer configured to spray at least one of the defibrillation electrode pads with the fluid.

5. The defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein the housing further supports the hydrating system.

6. The defibrillator according to claim 1, wherein the controller comprises a first controller, the defibrillator further comprising a second controller electrically coupled to the pair of defibrillation electrode pads.

7. The defibrillator according to claim 1, further comprising an electrode delivery system configured to generate and deliver electrical pulses or shocks via the pair of defibrillation electrode pads, wherein the controller is electrically coupled to the defibrillator electrode delivery system.

8. A device comprising:

an automated external defibrillator configured to deliver electrical pulses and/or shocks to a heart of a patient, the defibrillator comprising;

a defibrillator electrode delivery system configured to generate the electrical pulses and/or the shocks, the defibrillator electrode delivery system including a pair of defibrillation electrode pads, each pad supporting a hydrogel to facilitate the deliverance of the electrical pulses and/or the shocks to the patient;

a controller; and

a hydrating system including a fluid container and a sprayer, the fluid container maintaining a fluid, the controller being configured to control the sprayer to periodically spray at least one of the defibrillation electrode pads with the fluid while the automated external defibrillator is stored to prolong the effectiveness of the respective hydrogel.

9. An automated external defibrillator configured to deliver electrical pulses and/or shocks to a heart of a patient during a cardiac emergency, the defibrillator comprising:

a defibrillator electrode delivery system including a pair of defibrillation electrode pads, each pad supporting a hydrogel to facilitate the deliverance of electrical pulses and/or shocks to the patient;

a controller; and

a hydrating system including a fluid container and a sprayer, the fluid container maintaining a fluid, the controller being configured to control the sprayer to periodically spray at least one of the defibrillation electrode pads with the fluid to prolong the effectiveness of the hydrogel.

10. The defibrillator according to claim 9, wherein the fluid is water.

11. The defibrillator according to claim 9, wherein the defibrillator electrode delivery system includes an energy source, each defibrillation electrode pad being electrically coupled to the energy source to selectively enable the deliverance of electrical pulses and/or shocks to a patient.

12. The defibrillator according to claim 11, wherein at least one of the defibrillation electrode pads are fixed electrically coupled to the energy source.

13. The defibrillator according to claim 9, wherein the hydrating system includes a plurality of sprayers, each sprayer configured to spray at least one of the defibrillation electrode pads with the fluid.

14. The defibrillator according to claim 9, further comprising a housing supporting the defibrillator electrode delivery system and the hydrating system.

15. The defibrillator according to claim 9, wherein the hydrating system comprises a motor configured to spray the fluid from the sprayers.

16. The defibrillator according to claim 9, wherein the controller comprises a first controller, the defibrillator electrode delivery system comprising a second controller electrically coupled to the pair of defibrillation electrode pads.

17. The defibrillator according to claim 16, wherein the first controller is operatively coupled to the second controller.

18. The defibrillator according to claim 9, wherein the controller is electrically coupled to the defibrillator electrode delivery system.
