1. A system for monitoring a patient on an elevated patient support surface, the system comprising:

  • a camera configured to output a plurality of video frames of the elevated patient support surface; and

    a computing system configured to;

    receive the plurality of video frames from the camera;

    define a plurality of zones based on the plurality of video frames of the elevated patient support surface, the plurality of zones comprising a left inner zone that extends adjacently along a left side boundary outside of the elevated patient support surface, a left outer zone that extends adjacently along a left side of the left inner zone, a right inner zone that extends adjacently along a right side boundary outside of the elevated patient support surface, a right outer zone that extends adjacently along a right side of the right inner zone, and at least one end zone, each end zone extends along a respective top or bottom side boundary outside of the elevated patient support surface;

    monitor the plurality of video frames for motion within each of the plurality of zones based on at least some of the plurality of video frames, wherein the computing system is further configured to monitor the plurality of video frames by detecting a number of edges that are present within the plurality of zones;

    in response to a first motion being detected in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone before the first motion is detected in any of at least the one left outer zone, the right outer zone, and the at least one end zone, issue an alert with the user interface, wherein the first motion is associated with a first person or object;

    in response to a second motion being detected in any of at least the one left outer zone, the right outer zone, and the at least one end zone before the second motion is detected in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone, disarm issuance of the alert while simultaneously continuing to monitor and archive the plurality of video frames for motion in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone to for a predetermined duration, wherein the second motion is associated with a second person or object; and

    in response to the second motion being detected in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone after the second motion is already detected in any of at least the one left outer zone,the right outer zone, and the at least one end zone, extend the predetermined duration of disarming the issuance of the alert while simultaneously continuing to monitor and archive the plurality of video frames for motion in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone.
