Abstract

A mounting system with a lock switch can be used to releasably attach a first item, such as a protective encasement for an electronic device, to a second item, such as a bicycle mount, suction cup mount, or a surface in a home, office, or vehicle. The mount assembly may include a housing that encloses a cam and torsion spring disposed within a housing volume and has a portion that rotates relative to the cam. A recess in the mount assembly can receive and retain a mounting cleat associated with the first item. One or more clasp mechanisms of the mount assembly can be configured to clasp the mounting cleat when it is inserted into the recess, and to release the mounting cleat when the one housing portion is rotated relative to the cam. A locking mechanism may be included that prevents the housing from rotating and releasing the cleat.

Claims

1. A mount assembly for releasably receiving a mounting cleat, the mount assembly comprising:

an inner assembly rotatably connected to an outer housing, the inner assembly and outer housing together defining a housing volume;

a recess disposed in a top surface of the inner assembly, the recess configured to receive the mounting cleat;

a biasing device disposed within the housing volume, the biasing device comprising a first end and a second end, the first end of the biasing device being connected to the outer housing, and the second end of the biasing device being connected to the inner assembly, wherein the inner assembly is rotatable between an unrotated position and a rotated position relative to the outer housing, such that when the inner assembly is in the rotated position, the biasing device exerts a force upon the inner assembly to return the inner assembly to the unrotated position;

a first clasp mechanism and a second clasp mechanism at least partially disposed within the housing volume, wherein the first and second clasp mechanisms extend into the recess to clasp the mounting cleat when the inner assembly is in the unrotated position, and wherein the first and second clasp mechanisms are retracted from the recess to release the mounting cleat when the inner assembly is in the rotated position; and

a rotation-locking mechanism having a locked position in which a locking cam is removably disposed through a locking element channel of the outer housing into a locking element receptacle formed in a perimeter of the inner assembly, the locked position of the rotation-locking mechanism preventing rotation of the inner assembly from the unrotated position, and an unlocked position wherein the locking cam is removed from the locking element receptacle to permit rotation of the inner assembly.

The mount assembly of claim 1, the locking element receptacle further comprising a locking cam pivot formed at an axis of the locking cam, the locking cam pivot to rotatably engage a portion of the outer housing to secure the locking cam to the outer housing, and to permit rotation of the locking cam about the locking cam axis.

3. The mount assembly of claim 2, further comprising a locking cam lever extending from a side of the locking cam away from the outer housing to permit a user to rotate the locking cam about the locking cam pivot.

4. The mount assembly of claim 1, further comprising a textured surface on an exterior portion of the locking cam, the textured surface to allow a user to apply sufficient force to the locking cam and cause it to rotate.

The mount assembly of claim 1, the locking element receptacle having a gradual slope portion, such that when the rotation-locking mechanism is in a partially unlocked position and the inner assembly is rotated, the inner assembly presses against a portion of the locking cam to rotate the rotation-locking mechanism to the unlocked position and allow the inner assembly to rotate and retract the first and second clasping mechanisms.

6. The mount assembly of claim 1, further comprising one or more depressions on the outer housing and one or more corresponding bumps positioned on the locking cam, the depressions and bumps to interact and provide a user with tactile feedback as to how far the locking cam has been rotated.

7. The mount assembly of claim 1, further comprising one or more bumps on the outer housing and one or more corresponding depressions positioned on the locking cam, the depressions and bumps to interact and provide a user with tactile feedback as to how far the locking cam has been rotated.

8. A mount assembly for releasably receiving a mounting cleat, the mount assembly comprising:

a top housing portion rotatably connected to a bottom housing portion, the top and bottom housing portions together defining a housing volume;

a recess disposed in a top surface of the top housing portion, the recess configured to receive the mounting cleat;

a biasing device disposed within the housing volume, the biasing device comprising a first end and a second end, the first end of the biasing device being connected to the bottom housing portion, and the second end of the biasing device being connected to the top housing portion, wherein the top housing portion is rotatable between an unrotated position and a rotated position relative to the bottom housing portion, such that when the top housing portion is in the rotated position, the biasing device exerts a force upon the top housing portion to return the top housing portion to the unrotated position;

a first clasp mechanism and a second clasp mechanism at least partially disposed within the housing volume, wherein the first and second clasp mechanisms extend into the recess to clasp the mounting cleat when the top housing portion is in the unrotated position, and wherein the first and second clasp mechanisms are retracted from the recess to release the mounting cleat when the top housing portion is in the rotated position; and

a rotation-locking mechanism configured to temporarily prevent rotation of the top housing portion when the rotation-locking mechanism is in a locked position.

The mount assembly of claim 8, the rotation-locking mechanism having a rotatable locking cam disposed through a locking element channel of the mount assembly to either permit or prevent rotation of the top housing portion, the locking cam having a locked position wherein the locking cam is disposed in a locking element receptacle formed in a perimeter of the top housing portion to prevent rotation of the top housing portion, and an unlocked position wherein the locking cam is removed from the locking element receptacle.

The mount assembly of claim 9, the locking element receptacle further comprising a locking cam pivot formed at an axis of the locking cam, the locking cam pivot to rotatably engage portions of the top and bottom housing portions to secure the locking cam to the mount assembly, and to permit rotation of the locking cam about the locking cam axis.

11. The mount assembly of claim 10, further comprising a locking cam lever extending from a side of the locking cam away from the mount assembly to permit a user to rotate the locking cam about the locking cam pivot.

12. The mount assembly of claim 9, further comprising a textured surface on an exterior portion of the locking cam, the textured surface to allow a user to apply sufficient force to the locking cam and cause the locking cam to rotate.

The mount assembly of claim 9, the locking element receptacle having a gradual slope portion, such that when the locking cam is in a partially unlocked position and the top housing portion is rotated, the top housing portion presses against a portion of the locking cam to rotate the locking cam to the unlocked position and allows the top housing portion to rotate and retract the first and second clasping mechanisms.

14. The mount assembly of claim 9, further comprising one or more depressions within the housing volume and one or more corresponding bumps positioned on the locking cam, the depressions and bumps to interact and provide a user with tactile feedback as to how far the locking cam has been rotated.

15. The mount assembly of claim 9, further comprising one or more bumps within the housing volume and one or more corresponding depressions positioned on the locking cam, the depressions and bumps to interact and provide a user with tactile feedback as to how far the locking cam has been rotated.

16. A mount assembly for releasably receiving a mounting cleat, the mount assembly comprising:

a housing defining a housing volume, the housing rotatably connected to a center cam;

a recess disposed in a top surface of the housing, the recess configured to receive the mounting cleat;

a biasing device disposed within the housing volume, the biasing device comprising a first end and a second end, the first end of the biasing device being connected to the center cam and the second end of the biasing device being connected to the housing, wherein the housing is rotatable between an unrotated position and a rotated position relative to the center cam, such that when the housing is in the rotated position, the biasing device exerts a force upon the housing to return the housing to an unrotated position;

a first clasp mechanism and a second clasp mechanism at least partially disposed within the housing volume, wherein the first and second clasp mechanisms extend into the recess to clasp the mounting cleat when the housing is in the unrotated position, and wherein the first and second clasp mechanisms retract from the recess to release the mounting cleat when the housing is in the rotated position; and

a rotation-locking mechanism configured to temporarily prevent rotation of the housing when the rotation-locking mechanism is in a locked position.

The mount assembly of claim 16, the rotation-locking mechanism having a rotatable locking cam disposed through a locking element channel of the housing to either permit or prevent rotation of the housing, the locking cam having a locked position wherein the locking cam is disposed in a locking element receptacle formed in a perimeter of the housing to prevent rotation of the housing, and an unlocked position wherein the locking cam is removed from the locking element receptacle.

The mount assembly of claim 17, the locking element receptacle further comprising a locking cam pivot formed at an axis of the locking cam, the locking cam pivot to rotatably engage a portion of the housing to secure the locking cam to the housing, and to permit rotation of the locking cam about the locking cam axis.

19. The mount assembly of claim 18, further comprising a locking cam lever extending from a side of the locking cam away from the housing to permit a user to rotate the locking cam about the locking cam pivot.

20. The mount assembly of claim 17, further comprising a textured surface on an exterior portion of the locking cam, the textured surface to allow a user to apply sufficient force to the locking cam and cause the locking cam to rotate.

The mount assembly of claim 17, the locking element receptacle having a gradual slope portion, such that when the locking cam is in a partially unlocked position and the housing is rotated, the housing presses against a portion of the locking cam to rotate the locking cam to the unlocked position and allows the housing to rotate and retract the first and second clasping mechanisms.

22. The mount assembly of claim 17, further comprising one or more depressions on the housing and one or more corresponding bumps positioned on the locking cam, the depressions and bumps to interact and provide a user with tactile feedback regarding how far the locking cam has been rotated.

23. The mount assembly of claim 17, further comprising one or more bumps on the housing and one or more corresponding depressions positioned on the locking cam, the depressions and bumps to interact and provide a user with tactile feedback regarding how far the locking cam has been rotated.
