1. A rationalized process plant alarm system comprising:

  • a memory device;

    one or more processors communicatively coupled to said memory device, said one or more processors programmed to;

    receive a set of design parameters relating to a potential alarm;

    evaluate the set of design parameters of the potential alarm in a design phase of an alarm rationalization process;

    categorize the potential alarm as an event or a diagnostic, which relates to maintenance and diagnosis of the plant, or as an alert or an alarms, which relates to normal or abnormal operations;

    prioritize the potential alarm by determining an alarm class for the potential alarm which indicates the urgency of response based on a seriousness of consequences of inaction and an allowable response time;

    receive an indication of a plant event from at least one of a plurality of field devices;

    compare the received indication to the received set of design parameters; and

    display a notification of the potential alarm using the determined alarm class as at least one of an event, a diagnostic, an alert, and an alarm based on the comparison and in accordance with the received set of design parameters.
