Abstract

Methods are provided for using an intraocular shunt deployment device to deploy an intraocular shunt from the device and into an eye.

Claims

1. A method for deploying an intraocular shunt within an eye, the method comprising:

inserting a device through a cornea of an eye into an anterior chamber angle of the eye, the device comprising a hollow shaft extending within a sleeve, the shaft holding an intraocular shunt;

contacting a distal edge of the sleeve against the anterior chamber angle; and

while maintaining the sleeve distal edge in contact with the anterior chamber angle, advancing the shunt from the device to position the shunt within the eye.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the contacting comprises advancing the shaft through the anterior chamber angle.

3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the contacting comprises abutting the sleeve against the anterior chamber angle to provide resistance feedback to an operator that no further advancement is necessary.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the advancing comprises forming a flow path from an anterior chamber of the eye to an area of lower pressure.

5. The method according to claim 4, wherein the area of lower pressure is superficial to an inner surface of sclera.

6. The method according to claim 4, wherein the area of lower pressure is selected from the group consisting of:

intra-Tenon'"'"'s space, a subconjunctival space, an episcleral vein, a suprachoroidal space, and Schlemm'"'"'s canal.

7. A method for deploying an intraocular shunt within an eye, the method comprising:

inserting a device into an eye through a cornea of the eye, the device comprising a hollow shaft and a radially protruding component, the shaft holding an intraocular shunt;

advancing the shaft through the eye until the radially protruding component contacts anterior chamber angle tissue to provide resistance against further advancement of the device; and

advancing the shunt from the device to form a flow path from an anterior chamber of the eye to an area of lower pressure.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the radially protruding component comprises a sleeve, the shaft extending within the sleeve.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the advancing comprises advancing the device through the eye until the radially protruding component contacts sclera.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the advancing comprises advancing the shaft until the radially protruding component presses against the anterior chamber angle tissue.

11. The method according to claim 7, wherein the area of lower pressure is selected from the group consisting of:

intra-Tenon'"'"'s space, a subconjunctival space, an episcleral vein, a suprachoroidal space, and Schlemm'"'"'s canal.

The method according to claim 7, wherein the device comprises a deployment mechanism at least partially disposed within a housing thereof, and wherein rotation of the deployment mechanism results in axial movement of the shaft relative to the shunt to advance the shunt relative to the shaft, the method further comprising rotating the deployment mechanism to advance the shunt from the device and into the eye.

13. The method according to claim 12, wherein the device comprises a sleeve, the shaft disposed within the sleeve, and wherein the rotating causes proximal axial movement of a distal end of the shaft into the sleeve.
