1. A communication system for communicating with a base station without being exposed to high-power radiation, comprising:

  • a) a plurality of mobile devices, each of which is configured to communicate over a cellular network by a high-power transceiver and to carry out low-power wireless communication with a low-power transceiver;

    b) a base station for transmitting and receiving high-power radio frequency (RF) signals upon demand; and

    c) a multi-channel hub device positioned in a public area and interfaceable with both said base station by high-power RF communication signals and with said plurality of mobile devices by low-power RF communication signals, said multi-channel hub device being operable to;

    i. detect an entry of one or more of said plurality of mobile devices into said public area upon determining that the mobile devices are spaced less than a predetermined distance from said hub device;

    ii. cause a high-power transceiver of each of said detected mobile devices to become automatically disabled following detection; and

    iii. initiate a pairing operation with each of said detected mobile devices to facilitate subsequent transparent communication using high-power transmitting functions in a low power mode over a corresponding communication channel to be established by said hub device.
