Abstract

Aspects of detecting the unauthorized consumption of electrical energy are described. In some embodiments, a system includes a guided surface waveguide probe that launches a guided surface wave along a surface of a terrestrial medium. The system further includes metering systems that are distributed within a geographical region associated with the guided surface waveguide probe. The system also includes at least one computing device and memory storing computer instructions that cause the at least one computing device to generate an energy flow map using data obtained from the metering systems.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a guided surface waveguide probe configured to launch a guided surface wave along a surface of a terrestrial medium;

a plurality of metering systems distributed within a geographical region associated with the guided surface waveguide probe;

at least one computing device; and

memory storing a plurality of computer instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to at least generate an energy flow map using at least data obtained from the plurality of metering systems.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of computer instructions further cause the at least one computing device to at least:

compare the energy flow map to an expected energy flow map; and

detect that a comparison of the energy flow map to the expected energy flow map indicates that an unexpected guided surface wave receive structure exists in the geographical region.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the plurality of computer instructions further cause the at least one computing device to at least generate the expected energy flow map based on energy consumption data associated with a guided surface wave receive structure.

4. The system of claim 2, wherein the plurality of computer instructions further cause the at least one computing device to at least:

calculate at least one expected electric field vector;

calculate at least one expected magnetic field vector;

calculate at least one energy flow vector based on the at least one expected electric field vector and the at least one expected magnetic field vector; and

generate the expected energy flow map based on the at least one expected magnetic field vector.

5. The system of claim 2, wherein the plurality of computer instructions further cause the at least one computing device to at least generate the expected energy flow map based on historical energy flow data for the geographical region.

6. The system of claim 2, wherein the plurality of computer instructions further cause the at least one computing device to at least:

calculate an energy flow vector associated with at least one of the plurality of metering systems, wherein the energy flow vector represents an energy magnitude and an energy direction associated with the at least one of the plurality of metering systems; and

generate the energy flow map based on the energy flow vector.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the energy flow vector is a Poynting vector.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein the plurality of computer instructions further cause the at least one computing device to at least calculate a cross product of an electric field vector and a magnetic field vector associated with the at least one of the plurality of metering systems to calculate the energy flow vector.

9. A method, comprising:

launching, using a guided surface waveguide probe, a guided surface wave along a surface of a terrestrial medium;

obtaining, by at least one computing device, data from a plurality of metering systems distributed within a geographical region associated with the guided surface waveguide probe; and

generating, by the at least one computing device, an energy flow map based on the data from the plurality of metering systems.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

comparing, by the at least one computing device, the energy flow map to an expected energy flow map; and

detecting, by the at least one computing device, that a comparison of the energy flow map to the expected energy flow map indicates that an unexpected guided surface wave receive structure exists in the geographical region.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising generating, by the at least one computing device, the expected energy flow map based on energy consumption data associated with the geographical region.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

calculating, by the at least one computing device, at least one expected electric field vector;

calculating, by the at least one computing device, at least one expected magnetic field vector;

calculating, by the at least one computing device, at least one energy flow vector based on the at least one expected electric field vector and the at least one expected magnetic field vector; and

generating, by the at least one computing device, the expected energy flow map based on the at least one expected energy flow vector.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising generating, by the at least one computing device, the expected energy flow map based on historical data for the geographical region.

14. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

calculating, by the at least one computing device, an energy flow vector associated at least one of the plurality of metering systems; and

generating, by the at least one computing device, the energy flow map based on the energy flow vector.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the energy flow vector is a Poynting vector.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising calculating, by the at least one computing device, the energy flow vector by at least calculating a cross product of an electric field vector and a magnetic field vector associated with the at least one of the plurality of metering systems.

17. A system, comprising:

a guided surface waveguide probe configured to launch a guided surface wave along a surface of a terrestrial medium;

a plurality of meters;

at least one computing device; and

memory storing a plurality of computer instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to at least generate an energy flow map based on electric field data and magnetic field data obtained from the plurality of meters.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the plurality of computer instructions further cause the computing device to at least:

compare the energy flow map to an expected energy flow map; and

detect that a comparison of the energy flow map to the expected energy flow map indicates that an unexpected guided surface wave receive structure exists in a geographical region in which the guided surface waveguide probe operates.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the plurality of computer instructions further cause the at least one computing device to at least generate the expected energy flow map based on energy consumption data associated with a guided surface wave receive structure.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein the plurality of computer instructions further cause the at least one computing device to at least generate the expected energy flow map based on historical data for a geographical region in which the guided surface waveguide probe operates.
