1. A mobile phone including a processor, a wireless interface, a memory, a sensor, a 2D image sensor, and a display, instructions in the memory configuring the processor to enable the following acts:
- use the 2D image sensor to capture imagery depicting a graphical indicia presented by a proximate first device, the indicia representing plural-bit payload data;
extract the plural-bit payload data from said depicted graphical indicia;
download to the mobile phone, through the wireless interface, first user interface software corresponding to the first device, by reference to the extracted plural-bit payload data;
interact with the first device by user interaction with the downloaded first user interface software;
recall second user interface software corresponding to a second device from the mobile phone memory, said second user interface software having been earlier downloaded to the mobile phone based on plural-bit payload data extracted from a graphical indicia depicted in imagery earlier captured by the 2D image sensor from said second device; and
interact with the second device by user interaction with the recalled second user interface software;
wherein the 2D image sensor requires proximity within 10 feet of a device in order to capture a depiction of graphical indicia from which plural-bit payload data is extracted and obtain the user interface software for the device based thereon, but the mobile phone can thereafter interact with that device, and one or more others from which it has previously captured imagery, while no longer in proximity with such device(s).

Abstract
Mobile phones and other portable devices are equipped with a variety of technologies by which existing functionality can be improved, and new functionality can be provided. Some aspects relate to visual search capabilities, and determining appropriate actions responsive to different image inputs. Others relate to processing of image data. Still others concern metadata generation, processing, and representation. Yet others concern user interface improvements. Other aspects relate to imaging architectures, in which a mobile phone'"'"'s image sensor is one in a chain of stages that successively act on packetized instructions/data, to capture and later process imagery. Still other aspects relate to distribution of processing tasks between the mobile device and remote resources (“the cloud”). Elemental image processing (e.g., simple filtering and edge detection) can be performed on the mobile phone, while other operations can be referred out to remote service providers. The remote service providers can be selected using techniques such as reverse auctions, through which they compete for processing tasks. 3. A method comprising the acts:

(a) establishing authorization for a first smartphone to control a wireless-equipped device, said act of establishing authorization including the first smartphone receiving—
while at a first location near the device—
information via a radio signal transmitted from the device, where near means less than 10 meters;(b) after act (a), presenting, on the first smartphone, a user interface for controlling the device, said user interface corresponding to said information received via the radio signal; (c) after act (b), receiving an instruction from a user, through the user interface presented on the first smartphone, to control said device; (d) after act (c), while the first smartphone is at a second location remote from the device, transmitting a command from the first smartphone, based on said received instruction, to which command the device responds, where remote means more than 10 meters; wherein establishing said authorization requires the first smartphone to be at a location near the device, but once authorization is established, the first smartphone can control the device from remote locations; and wherein said ability of the first smartphone to control the device from remote locations terminates when a second smartphone at a location near the device performs said act of establishing authorization to control said device. - View Dependent Claims (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

17. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing software instructions for adapting a mobile phone, which includes a processor and a camera, to perform acts including:

capturing imagery depicting a first graphical indicia presented by a proximate first device, said indicia representing first plural-bit payload data; extracting the first plural-bit payload data from said depicted graphical indicia; downloading to the mobile phone, through the wireless interface, first user interface software corresponding to the first device, by reference to the extracted first plural-bit payload data; capturing imagery depicting a second graphical indicia presented by a proximate second device, said indicia representing second plural-bit payload data; extracting the second plural-bit payload data from said depicted second graphical indicia; downloading to the mobile phone, through the wireless interface, second user interface software corresponding to the second device, by reference to the extracted second plural-bit payload data; and presenting a menu by which a user can select the first or second user interface software, for interacting with the first or second device; wherein extraction of the first and second plural-bit payload data requires that the mobile phone have been brought within proximity of less than ten feet of the first and second devices, but once corresponding user interface software has been downloaded, the mobile phone can interact from said devices without being in such proximity of the devices.
